Serenity - Movie Of The Year?

Went to see this with my sister yesterday-now shes a HUGE firefly fan but i had NEVER saw an episode so went in expecting very little!

But i was BLOWN away-it really is a breathe of fresh air to the shi-fi genre and joss whedon works his magic brilliantly! (And i have now dug out the firefly DVD collection-MUST start watching it tomorrow)

Based on the cancelled TV show Firefly-and written and directed by Buffy and Angel's Joss Whedon (He also created the TV)-The show became a cult hit (and raved by critics)-but not a ratings winner and so got cancelled by FOX after only the first season!
The film centers around Captain Malcolm ReynolRAB, a hardened veteran (on the losing side) of a galactic civil war, who now ekes out a living pulling off small crimes and transport-for-hire aboard his ship, Serenity. He leaRAB a small, eclectic crew who are the closest thing he has left to family - squabbling, insubordinate and undyingly loyal.

When Mal takes on two new passengers-a young doctor and his unstable, telepathic sister-he gets much more than he bargained for. The pair are fugitives from the coalition dominating the universe, who will stop at nothing to reclaim the girl. The crew that was once used to skimming the outskirts of the galaxy unnoticed find themselves caught between the unstoppable military force of the Universal Alliance and the horrific, cannibalistic fury of the Reavers, savages who roam the very edge of space. Hunted by vastly different enemies, they begin to discover that the greatest danger to them may be on board Serenity herself.

The action was mindblowing, edge of your seat stuff-the humour was VERY different-its not stand out comedy funny but the lines are witty, quirky and pure gold so its hard not to laugh ;)

The characters were brilliant-so complex!

ALL the actors are virtually unknown but play the parts incredibly!

Its also rather romantic and emotional-which because of the violence AND the romance aspect of the movie make it perfect for both men and women..

Joss Whedon-take a bow (And while your at it bring us a sequel) ;)

Go see you WONT be disapointed!

Brilliant movie !!

I had only seen two episodes of the show, but as it turned out , it doesn't matter - it makes perfect sense without any knowledge of the Firefly series.

It's unlike any movie (sci-fi or otherwise) that I've seen, so it's impossible to compare it to anything.

It's got realistic, likeable and understandable characters. The story itself is superb and the dialogue is sharp, witty and beautifully written.

The action pieces are thrilling and are made all the more exciting when you actually care about the fate of the characters.

Highly recommended !!

Did I see a different film to you guys?

I saw a derivitive western in space sci fi so beloved of cheesy '80s movie makers with a few anime overtones thrown in to freshen it up?

Granted given how bad this summers films have been that was a million times more imagination than Bewitched or Dukes of Hazzard used.

On the plus side there's backing for 2 more films there so if you guys enjoyed it go see it again, buy the merchendise and generally back it and you'll get a sequel

Chiewitel Ejifor (may have spelt it wrong) is also in Four Brothers at the moment, and was in Dirty Pretty Things which I think is a big film for the industry cause it delt with immigration and all that, but not a big film for audiences. I've seen it but was made to watch it in media.

Anywho, I loved the film too. But then again, im a Firefly fan.

I love this film as well and am off to see it again later on today. Admittedly I am a Firefly fan, but I have been with three different sets of new people so far and everyone has loved it.

The current box office figures have it a very close 2nd to Pride and Prejudice on first day takings :)

wow thanks! I really wanna see this movie, but I cant get anyone to come with me cas they're all convinced its a pile of nerdy sh*t :(

Indeed, go on your own. It's not nerd stuff, it's pretty mainstream. I mean, hello, hovercraft chases, sword fights, fist fights, space battles.. what more do you want? ;)

went by myself today, going thursday with mates and then off saturday again by myself, i love this movie, best ive seen in ages! tops everything this year so far!

such a great ass kicking,gun slinging,western in space :D

I was a mite disappointed as I didn't think the character development was done well enough for those who hadn't seen the series, and I thought it wasn't as unassumingly funny as the series was.

Saying that, I did like it :D

There is only so much time in a movie for character development - you don't get the leisurely timescale you do in a series and personally I think Joss did an excellent job within these restrictions - obviously someone just watching the movie isn't going to get to know the characters as well as we did over the course of the series, but I do think they get to know them enough within the context of the film and it works very well.

Ach, maybe it's harder coming from seeing the series.

I just don't think that
Wash getting killed
has as much an effect on someone who hasn't seen the series as it would have on someone who has. For example.

There was little in the way of dialogue for people to get to know the characters...

Well it's obvious that that event will effect Firefly fans more, but I went with several non browncoats and they were all effected and shocked by it as well, just probably not as much as us.

Joss has written some very clever character building dialogue - it might not go on as much and give as much detail as in the series - it can't do that cos it hasn't got time - but he is excellent at using a few worRAB to give a lot of imformation.

People I've seen have loved this film whether or not they have seen firefly :)
