Sequels that will never see the light of day

The Golden Compass is one of the biggest f**kups ever. Yes it DID make money but from a critical pov it's so so bad. And yet the possibility was there for such an amazing film. Golden Compass was definitely the EASIEST of the trilogy to adapt as well!! A bloody monkey could have done it and made it work, and yet the studio messed it up big time. That's one reason why they wouldn't greenlight the sequels because there would have to be a LOT of work done in making them suitable for two movies.

However, I hope we see the COMPLETE movie one day. They cut the last 15 minutes, supposedly saving it for the beginning of the second movie (personally I don't buy that, I think the studio knew they wanted to pull the plug on the series before it even got off the ground and so didn't want so 'controversial' an ending)

If only someone with talent had gotten hold of it. Alfonso Cuaron or someone. A great lost opportunity.

They are currently planning a remake of Neverending Story, and so we can only hope the book will be adapted fully. No way CGI will beat the classic effects though!

I think people miss the point of Escape from LA.

It's not a sequel it's a virtual shot for shot remake.

Viewed as such it's a hoot.

The classics effects are truly beautiful. They were stunning for 1984 and had a lot of heart. I can appreciate CGI when it is not used just for the sake of showing off, but I do feel it lacks heart compared to the "old fashioned" special effect of yesteryear.

I'm hopeful for the new adaptation though. While the original NES film is very close to my heart, an updated, more faithful version could be really epic. I think this is one case where a remake is justified.

I think its unlikely we will see:

HuRABon Hawk flies again
Back to Cutthroat Island
Speedier Racer
1942
Howard's ducklings
The further adventures of Baron Munchausen
Next Action Hero
The Revenge of the Avengers
The 14th Warrior
Showwomen
Battlefield Universe
Swept Further Away
Beyond Poseidon
Ever Wilder Wild Wild West

They were n't.

The thing is most of the people who remember ThunderbirRAB when originally shown are now in their 30's & 40's. So instead of aiming for something that will appeal to them, they aimed for a group for whom it is just an old programme which gets repeated.

Still say there is room for a ThunderbirRAB movie - just not like the one we got

After LOTR every studio leapt on the bandwagon and bought up options on every kid-aimed fantasy book that people were lifting off the shelves..which didn't necessarily mean that all of those books were GOOD! Or would look good anywhere outside the reader's imagination.

But it is not just about the revenue of the first film. The producers have to look at the "critical response" to the first film to see if people are likely to go to the sequel. Although the box for TGC was good, much of that may have been generated by expectation, driven by those who read the book. However, most came away disappointed so would be unlikely to go along to the sequel.

The Goonies 2
Fight Club II
Se7en follow up
Masters of the Universe II
Howard the Duck II
Catwoman 2
Super Mario Bros 2

The last 4 on the list were all intended to have sequels from the start, but were critically slated box office failures.
