Sequels or continuing the story?

In another thread MusicDude posted this about High School Musical 3

The second one is alright but uneeded. When the first movie is so huge, people get ego's and have to make a sequel to get even more money. If i was a filmaker, i would never do a sequel. Only horror movies can really get away with sequels

It's ths line in bold that got me thinking. When is a film a sequel made purely for money and when is it the continuing story of a character?

Of course all films are made to make money, that isn't in dispute. Take for example the film "Wall Street."
Either this or next month there is a new Wall Street film opening in the cinemas. This takes place years later and Gordon Gecco has been in prison. Whilst it is a sequel, it is an logical continuation of the characters life.

If you compare that to the horror films. In most part it's just the same story rehashed over and over again. Freddy hunts, teenagers, he kills teenagers, that's it. Nothing really changes.
That same argument could be used for the series of "Rocky" films. He fights, he gets the crap beaten out of him but he enRAB up winning. It's the same thing over and over again. However what makes it different is the real story of the films is it's Rocky's life story. In each film there is a something significant in his life. Mickey dies and he loses his freind, trainer and mentor. The distance between him and his son. Finding that he is old news and no longer the man he was to the fans are just a few of the themes.

I think there is a difference between making a sequel purely for the money because there are films that you ask yourself, I wonder what happened to him/her afterwarRAB?
You want to know more of their life. With the horror films and a lot of the blockbuster films you don't get that as the story of that film seems to give you an ending. It's a moment in time that was captured. Each time you go back to it rather than being the continuation of that characters life it's like going over the same thing again.

I'm sure everyone that saw Silence of the Lambs all had the same thought at the end. I wonder where Hannibal went next and what did he do? Did he get caught?

Are all sequels bad because they are obviously made to make money or are there legitimate reasons for many of them to be made because the characters are interesting enough to warrant people's interest in their lives?

It also depenRAB on the overall tone of the movie. The Silence of the Lambs is a really tight thriller, but it's also a chiller.Hannibal is really interesting villain,so we were left wanting to know more about him,but leaving it open ended was also perfectly satisfactory.

The majority of sequels are artistically unnecessary, there is often room for continuity, but it's not essential. The Color of Money is another good example.Did we really need to know what 'Fast' Eddie was doing in the 1980's? On the other hand,it wasn't without interest.

The Godfather worked as a standalone epic and wrapped everything up nicely. The sequel wasn't essential, but it was continuity crafted to perfection.

One movie that certainly required continuity is the matinee blockbuster Star Wars. That is understandable because they were written as one long story.

Most sequels are simply cashing in on the charisma and likeability of the characters, rather than rich characterization,or because of a successful format.

Some sequels are good or even great, but none of them are really necessary. The only films that need to be continued with later entries are those made specifically to be told in more than one part e.g. the Lord of the Rings trilogy or the Kill Bill duology, which aren't really sequels so much as different parts of the same film.

F13 p2 was needed so we could see Jason on a killing spree
F13 p3 was needed so we could see Jason come back to life, go on a killing spree, get the hockey mask, and kill some more people
F13 p4 was needed to round off the Friday series
F13 p5 was needed as a experiment to see if they could get away with a non Jason movie
F13 p6 was needed to bring back our beloved slasher
not sure about p7 and p8
but F13 p9 was needed just for that cracking ending which I ain't gonna spoil
F13 p10 was defn needed cos it is a super movie made by people who truly love and understand what Jason is all about
F13 p11 JvF was also defn needed cos it finally.... finally pitched together Jason and Freddy ... and simply rocked.

What then should have happened was the release of a wondrous 2parter F12+F13 that gave all those fans who'd followed the series from the start a mind-blowing uber-super finalle.:p:cool: - F13 p13 released on F13 in any month would have drawn in the crowd by the millions.

Instead we got this crappy reinvision that sucked a$$ and was definately NOT needed or enjoyed.
