Sequel series that are better than the original

What seqeuel series are better than the original?

I don't think they are too many that we can agree on.

Dragon Ball Z is defentely on my list

Naruto Shippuden, I think is better than the original. I am not too sure.

It's hard to say a sequel is better, because they borrow the characters from the first series.

Ignoring that argument hole, I'd say Zeta is better than the original, and Clannad~After Story is so far better than its predecessor.

Outlaw Star is pretty much superior to Future Retro Hero Story in my opinion, and not just because it's the most well known, though Future Retro Hero Story is still entertaining, also (if this counts), I think the Ranma OVA's are far superior to the TV series (although the manga is still superior to the anime), mostly because the writing is better as well as the animation, and last but not least the Record of Lodoss War TV series, is in a way better than the OVA's, at least in my opinion

Full Metal Panic is good. Arguably very good, in fact. Full Metal Panic: The Second Raid beats the everliving hell out of it. It's one of those perfect sequels that continues the story effectively, focusing on the more serious side of things but not forgetting comedy either. It also wrote its characters brilliantly, so you care about what's happening to Sosuke and Chidori and even Tessa. What's more, the plot of the series was not even slightly afraid to mess around with the status quo. Seriously, it's so good that I can overlook the fact that the new villain doesn't compare to the sheer menace of Gauron.

If the drama and characterization don't get you hooked, the action will. You will believe that a giant robot can be a devastating weapon of war. The first episode really rocks.

By the way, in this thread, if a sequel series uses completely new characters and just continues a franchise for example Digimon Tamers is not a sequel to Digimon Adventures or Digimon Advetnures 02, that is not a sequel in the spirit of this discussion.

I view TSR as the direct sequel. Fumoffu, while very entertaining, is basically an anthology of comedy stories that mostly stand on their own just fine. Also, while I consider TSR superior to the original, I wouldn't say the same of Fumoffu. Fumoffu is absolutely hilarious, but the two main series have the complete package.

A lot of people say otherwise but I've found Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha's sequels to keep getting better and better with each one. In fact, at my anime club, I would have skipped directly to A's if it weren't for the fact that the first one introduces everybody.

And I know this is blasphemy but, screw it, I'm gonna say it. I like 5D's more than the original. Not gonna lie.

A's at least has an arc throughout the whole thing, whereas the original starts generic and then starts getting a bit unusual. So A's would qualify.

From what I've seen, Strikers is dreadful. I can tolerate a magical girl show. Sometimes, I can like one. I can't tolerate a show that is badly animated, introduces more characters than it knows what to do with, and goes from a faux magical girl series to a faux action series with less interesting action, characters and powers. A's at least had a few duels that were better than the original Nanoha/Fate showdown. Strikers had characters showing off special moves but not much actual...well, action.

They made stuff up and thought otaku would keep watching. Hey fans, look, your moe characters are all grown up now! Now we can get away with fanservice, so watch this! Like I said, dreadful. If they were going to make more, they should have done it with the REAL main characters in middle school like they were at the end of A's. But if you stop with A's, you have something acceptable. So if that's as far as you've been, do yourself a favor and stop.

Not that I mean to extol Nanoha as something super amazing that was defiled, but...yeah. I get annoyed when something decent gets turned into something truly bad.

Gundam 00 second season, IMO, is a million times better than the first season.

The action parts are awesome and in general I like it more. Character development is still meh, but overall a lot better.

Actually, I've already seen all three.

I thought StrikerS was not horrible. I'm not going to say it was better than A's but I do think it was a few steps above the original. I will admit it had more talking and expostion than action which annoyed me (I blame the switch from 13 episodes to 26.) but I think that the character development was better handled than the original. I am a little ticked that we never got a season involving Nanoha and the others in middle school. That would have been pretty good, though it could have gone into generic territory by having the typical, "magical girls in school scenario."

Currently at anime club, we've seen the first and second discs of my boxet. Maybe I'll just tell them that after A's its over lol.

Well, if anything, we can at least say that Subaru is truly the Princess of Braves.

Dragon Ball Z is the same story as Dragon Ball so I don't really considered it a seperate series.

Zeta Gundam is up there as it did up the stakes quite a bit.

I completely agree with you about Gauron. Gates was such a lame villain in comparison to him.

However, personally, as for TSR being superior to the 1st season in every ways, I'm going to have to sort of disagree. It was better in a lot of ways, but I also feel that the 1st season had its own strengths which were absent in TSR. I also disliked some of TSR's really bad moments (well, there were only 2, in the entire series, and it was mostly amazing, but they still bothered me). One example would be that Kaname look-alike hooker in China. That wasn't even in the original novel, and I have no idea what the writers were thinking when they thought that something as random and nonsensical as that would be good writing.

Overall, though, the sequel was truly great, and I'm sure that nobody would disagree with that.

Slayers NEXT is often cited as better than the first season. Some people even suggest skipping the first season, though I'd say that robs NEXT of the foundation of plot and humor laid down by its predecessor.

I agree completely. The first season was amazing on its own, and while After Story had something of a slow start, it's gotten more and more amazing for each passing episode ever since episode 9. Once I finished episode 18, I pretty much decided that it is, hanRAB down, the best series I've ever seen. That's how much better it is.

Full Metal Panic - The Second Raid is also WAY better than the first two series.
