Sequals that are better than the original?

I don't know about any sequals, but the main sequel that springs to mind for me is Back to the Future Part II. Both excellent films, but prefer the second one.

And Mission Impossible 3.

All but one of mine have already been mentioned:

Empire Strikes Back
X-Men 2
Godfather part II
Spider-Man 2

And my other one NOBODY agrees with me on, but I'll say it anyway:

Temple of Doom.

Highlander 2? .....:D

Sorry, I tried to keep a straight face, but I couldn't!

Serious answer, can't think of any that are actually better, but here are some damn good sequals:

Empire Strikes Back
Aliens
Terminator II

As good as they are though, none are so good as to be actually better than the original.

BTTF2 was good, Praxidike, but based entirely on contradictions with the first, which spoils it a bit (only a bit mind). Not a patch on BTTF.

I really liked that it went back and kind of redid things from the first one, it just made it different from a normal sequel in a way I thought was well done... I just like the way the films (including Part III for that matter) are all seamless, as if one long film, but Part II just did it perfectly for me.

The Godfather part II
Empire Strikes Back
Spiderman 2
Lord of the Rings:Return of the King
Dawn of The Dead
Good,The Bad & Ugly
Back to the Future III
Silence of the Lambs
Terminator 2
Devil's Rejects

Mad Max 2. The best of the trilogy.
Godfather 2. Beats the 1st simply for having the best ending to a movie in cinema history. Pacino's descent into darkness has never been equalled imo.

A few more off the top of my head -

Dawn Of The Dead.
Young Guns 2.
A Few Dollars More.

Don't get me wrong I love the whole trilogy, but there were rules set up in Part I that were then unashamedly broken in Part II. That's a no no!

X-Men 3? X2 is about the finest sequels ever made (completely forgot about that one), but X3 I thought was a bit of a mess in comparison.

Yep... X-Men 3 was idiotic compared to the subtle and nuanced X-Men 2. People blame Ratner for this, but he did a fine job of aping Singers' world - the blame lies squarely at the moronic script and the insanely short production time.
