Sentences for paedophiles (UK)? for lawyers?

I asked this this morning and never got a proper answer, It seems we all hate them, but no one knows why they get light sentences or even let off.

After watching ITV's "How to catch a paedophile" I was amazed that since 2005 Scotland Yard have prosecuted an amazing 350+ men convicted of various crimes against minors. apart from a few who received life sentences, the vast majority got between 6 month and 18 months. Some even managed to escape imprisonment, later to re-offend.

I ask -
Why are our Courts and our Government so lenient on what I and many consider the worst crime a human can commit?

And how can any Lawyer (especially female ones) defend these monsters?
 
Prison overcrowding may be one reason. I'm fairly certain that nobody has ever successfully managed to rehabilitate a paedophile, so the only solution I can see is to keep them away from children forever.

As to how can anyone defend them. Under British law they are entitled to a fair trial, so the last thing anyone would want is for them to be able to get off because their lawyer did a poor job.
 
I have never studied it closely but what always strikes me is that nobody chooses to be a paedophile in the sense that the desire is something in the brain a compulsion. So while it is a criminal offence and needs a sentence what is really needed is some sort of treatment. No matter how long a sentence it is they are going to come out again and unless something has been done to help them control the urge then they are likely to re-offend. So we can jump up and down and say never mind treatment put them in prison that attitude does not help the kids they are likely to abuse in the future whenever that is
 
Worse than murder? Really?

There is no such crime as "being a paedophile".

There are degrees of assault, degrees of internet abuse, different ages of children, so many variables and like any crime, the range of sentence reflects the degree of seriousness of the crime, the previous record of the offender and a number of other things.

Would you want to try people without legal representation? Surely the only reason we can legitimately sentence these people is because we give them a fair trial and proper legal representation? Lawyers defend these monsters, because they aren't guilty until the trial is complete, and it is their job to do so.
