Sending my work to an author...?

Authors are always advised by their agents to not read or review others works for legal reasons.

If you want someone to critique your work, I would try writersforum.org. It's a forum filled with serious writers who are looking to improve not only your work, but their own.

yeah, i wouldn't send my whole book to an author. i would maybe email them and say what its about and maybe include a fair excerpt from it (a chapter or two). that way they know your story and they know your writing style, and you'd get your feedback. (providing they make time to read it)

I don't think authors are supposed to accept work from other people. you know, legal reasons. If they're writing something similar, they don't want to get sued for "stealing" your idea.
