Sending emails from different addresses?

I am having trouble using my G1 trying to compose emails from account names other than the default gmail username. Through gmail on a laptop or pc I have multiple email addresses set up to send from (work accounts) and this works very well, but I cannot find the option when using my G1. Any suggestions?

I have searched everywhere and cannot find this function either, I don't think you can yet. Does anyone know if this function is slated for a future release or if it exists already?

You have to set up the different "From" address in the desktop version of gmail. I send all of my gmail "from" a different address. No one would ever know the difference unless they opened up the email and viewed the headers.

If you setup your email accounts to use pop3 or imap(better), then you can use and send from multiple email address'. In gmail goto the settings page in your account to enable imap access. Then on your phone goto the Email button in your menu and setup for all your accounts. Once you are at your main email screen with all your accounts you can choose one, and then click menu and compose to send an email from that address. You can also setup a default sending address so when you are just at the main email screen with all your accounts, you can click menu and compose to send from that default one.

The imap route is nice, but the problem is you don't get any caching or offline access which is terrible for spotty networks. POP is also bad because you're never synched up with your mailbox unless you choose to pull entirely from the server which then leaves you and the mercy of your phone entirely for email... plus neither of these two methods support PUSH, it's all on a pulling schedule, which drains battery life and isn't real-time or near real-time.

Either way, I would like to see the functionality of the gmail web system on the android. The worst part about this is my blackberry has all of these functions in the gmail app but android doesn't! How terrible is that? This makes the transition from my blackberry a difficult one.

Blackberry has been around for a long time. Android is still on ReleaseCandidate 30, IE, they haven't even released their first offical version of the software, this is still ""pre-release"". Give it some time it will.

And yeah, it pulls. You can set the interval in which it checks for new mail, so I wouldn't consider that a battery leak as much as the next thing. I'm pretty sure there's apps out there for Exchange connections, they might work differently.

Just yesterday I linked two email accounts (school and personal), and on my pc I can log in to Gmail and choose the option send from: a different address but I also couldn't find how to do it on the G1 Gmail application. I don't think it's supported . I don't want to use the other E-mail app because it doesn't do alerts well or retrieve messages the same as Gmail. I hope they add that option in a future release.

hmmmm just something else to wait for with this phone...

Well I guess your right about the ReleaseCandidate status, the best is yet to come.

Yes I realize this, that is why I wasn't complaining, I was simply asking if anyone had a roadmap with this feature on it.

I wouldn't consider that a batter leak either. I would however consider it more battery usage because that's the nature of push vs. pull.
Yes, there are apps out there for exchange, but none of them support push yet, I've tried them all.
