Semi-professional Photography Camera?

I've had a Canon Digital Rebel since high school, I've decided I would like to do parties and other events as a side job to help get through college. I have a $1300 best buy gift card so I've been looking at cameras. My question is, is more mp's better? How much of a difference would a 12 or 14 MP camera make over a 10 MP? Also would having a 14 mega pixel camera maybe require less lens changes? (Able to crop zoom instead of having to have a larger lens on). Just wondering how many mega pixels is best, if there is such a thing as too much mp's, and how much I should spend on the camera alone.

The Megapixel myth suggests that more is better, and that is only partially true. That is one of the last things you should be looking it, look at build quality, sensor size, ISO noise. U will be able to enlarge fairly well with even 6MP such as what I believe is found on the Nikon D40

And there is such a thing as too many Megapixels, this is more of a problem on point and shoot models. You can't jam so many pixel on such a small sensor and expect them all to look good.

As for switching lenses, that is what an SLR is all about!
U can crop closer but that will never replace a longer lens, they give you unique effects like a blurred out background, spend some of that money on at least one other good lens made by the company that made the camera you chose.
 
Yes, the more megapixels the better. You can't go wrong with a 12-14 megapixel camera. This makes it extremely easy if you would want to edit your pictures in fine detail or make large prints without the picture becoming pixelated (although you probably already know that). However, having more megapixels won't affect the need to change the lens when recquired. Megapixels relate to detail, lens relate to zoom and how much you get in the picture.

Nikon D40

It was voted best camera of the year...we use them at my school. They're amazing.
