Semi-Automatic car - hard to drive?

I want a convertible beetle but the ones that are the cheapest are either manual or semi-automatic. I've driven manual before but dad doesn't want me going for a manual license because it is "too hard". I have been learning to drive automatic instead. Do you need a manual license to drive semi-automatic? Is it hard and what is different about it?
