Self teaching in martial arts?

I'm looking to study Martial Arts. in general if i can, as many stances, styles, and strikes. I do strength workout, and watch a great many martial arts movies =)
I've looked locally for any kind of good mentor, but to no avail, everyone close enough claims to teach aLOT of branches (Taekwondo, Karate, Kung Fu, blah, blah, blah) which to me is a sign that they are not certified.
I am aware that teachers in Asia spend their entire lives learning and figuring out more and more, so it seems very .. not what i'm looking for, for someone to have loosely covered so much ground.
I am looking for mainly self defense, but fighting in general, I've looked into Muay Thai because it uses Elbows and Knees which from a physical standpoint can be the most lethal strikes possible. (bigger muscles involved)
Any suggestions or ideas? i don't exactly want to hear i need a mentor, because unless i drive an hour through the city or somewhere else, i won't find a good one. So if you know basic things, (like never do blah blah, because it could blah blah) it would help alot. =)
