Self-portraits for photography class?

My photography teacher forbids us to use ourselves in any pictures we take. She says it's unprofessional. I think that you should be able to take pictures of whatever you want, as long as the pictures come out well. So do you agree that self-portraits are unprofessional to do as a photographer? And when I say self-portraits, I don't mean myspace like pictures.

I think your teacher is trying to get people to turn their cameras around and shoot other subjects. Too many young photographers concentrate on self portraits so much that they miss out on everything else. Professional usually means selling your work, and the market for self portraits is very limited. That might be what they mean.

Here are two of my favorite self portrait artists on Flickr. I highly disagree with your teacher, however she may be trying to force MySpacers into a new directions, so I understand.

Well if I were a prospective client and I was going to look at your portfolio and I see photographs of yourself, I would say it is tacky. That is my opinion.
