I loved the original and I expected to be disappointed by the remake, but I have to admit I really enjoyed it.

There were a few things I didn't like (such as making the lead a 12-year-old boy rather than 16, and making him learn Kung Fu rather than karate) but these are minor issues that shouldn't prevent you from enjoying the movie.

The climatic tournament had the audience cheering and clapping, almost as though we were watching a live show. And Jackie Chan was surprisingly likeable as the new Mr Miyagi!

The remake was alright, pretty much the same stuff as the original but not as memorable,i didnt like that the kid is very young and that its called karate kid when its kung fu hes learning, just seems like another reason 2 cash in,

I came back from the free screening last night - thanks RAB!

I was actually pleasantly surprised by the movie, it's not usually my type of film but I went to see it because it was free. I thoroughly enjoyed it however, even though I wasn't expecting much, not being a fan of Jackie Chan movies.

There were of course some criticisms - it being a reboot of the Karate Kid franchise...that featured Kung Fu rather than Karate for example. The protagonist, Dre (played by Will Smith's son Jayden Smith) was very young for the role but I felt it was a pretty good mainstream breakthrough performance.

The movie itself was entertaining and nostalgic in it's own way, the pace and style hearkening back to early 90's and late 80's movies. A lot of the camera shots could have come from an early 90's blockbuster. The characters were very steady, well characterized but not gritty, making this ideal watchable family fare.

Jackie Chan was surprisingly very likeable in this role, proving he can be a serious actor as well as his usual roles.

I also went to a free preview and really enjoyed it even though I had some doubts about it beforehand. Thought there were a few scenes that dragged a bit at first before showing its purpose. Also a couple of very minor storyline issues but they can be overlooked due to chemistry of Jaden Smith & Jackie Chan and all the kung-fu action.
However, it did make uncomfortable viewing seeing a 12-year old beaten up like that, it looked like they were so close to killing him! I used to always be squeamish at the injuring of Daniel's leg and hated watching it in the original but the scene in this new one was so much more cruel!
I think Jaden is a real charmer, has great timing and the potential to be a great actor. I know that there'll be people slagging him off because his parents produced this movie but it is evident that he put a lot of effort into this role and made a worthy leading role.

I watched the free preview on Monday night and i enjoyed it, after watching the orginal in my youth ... many years ago.... I found i enjoyed the remake a bit more (not saying the original was bad its a great film). The updated version had some more humour and found i was laughing a lot.

The story follows the same plot lines and you can see the original scenes being done... the fights where more brutal.
