within the last 2 yrs? Security Clearnace(top secret) for an IT in the Navy...I have bad credit history within the last 2 yrs most of which are in collections totaling around 5000 dollars or so. I was dumb and young-er and got a bunch of credit cards and maxed out my limits. My question is before I was sworn in at the end of my MEPS trip the recruiter had me sign my name at the bottom of this form about my financial history and any accidents or drug use or like anything in my past...I didn't fill anything in because he just gave it to me ran through it and had me sign real fast....I have been researching and I don't want to be denied clearance over that is there a time where I can clear this up so the investigation doesn't turn this up after the fact???? I'm really upset about this because I look forward to my job as IT. ANYTHING I CAN DO NOW BEFORE I SHIP TO BASIC OR WHILE I'M THERE!!!????

I knew a guy in boot that got cross rated because of bad credit from a "TS specific rate" to an SK. Not that good of a cross rate if you ask me, especially in an advancement perspective. It would be best to go and talk to them now and fill out the right paperwork, as said before it is better to be up front because they WILL find out anyway and then make the process that much more difficult. TS clearances don't mess around.

I was 8 thousand in debt but payign it off and still got my secret clearance, as long as you are making an effort to pay it off, you can always get a loan to pay it off and then pay off the loan.

Sorry to be the "messenger"... but, kiss the Top Secret Clearance goodbye....
One of the more important points in this 'shake down' of past history centers
around an individual's financial responsibility... and, this is sure to come out... period
They see such an item as a major point of volnerability to outside influences....

And, it would be a major plus for you to get the details of this matter out in front
of someone as rapidly as possible BEFORE you get any farther down the road...
ESPECIALLY before getting to basic... because any delay will simply make it look
as though you have tried to "get this one by them".... and, that will not bring anything
but problems for you .....

expect to be denied anyway because you are in collections. if you did not list anything you may be discharged for fraudulent entry(lying ona federal document) so make sure you get with your recruiter and add those items in. even if you are ultimately denied that's still better than being totally kicked out with no chance of ever enlisting again.

it is possible to get a Clearance after being in for a while and proving you are worthy so all hope is not lost.
