I was exaggering for comic effect, but only slightly. Elfman is usually good, but he can sometimes be on autopilot (Terminator: Salvation comes to mind). Michael Giacchino and Alexandre Desplat do consistently excellent work.
But in the past decade we've been seeing all of the film scoring masters either dying (Goldsmith, Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Basil Poledouris, ect.) or else retiring (John Barry). There's a disenheartening blandness to a lot of today's film music. Goldsmith's NIMH score is amongst my favorites, but can you imagine anyone living up to it today?
