Second hand smoke and GERD?

My GERD symptoms started when I was living overseas with some people who smoked. Before that, there was no GERD-it started very suddenly.

I've read that if GERD starts suddenly, it has a specific trigger. Could being exposed to secondhand smoke trigger GERD? Thanks for answers.
