Seat belt laws can suck it! long read

Yup. Airbags are debatable, for how often they save lives. But seatbelts, it is very, very rare that they would aid in even injuring someone more than if they're not used.

I completely agree with mandatory seatbelt laws. Thing is, in my opinion, it's something so obvious that it shouldn't have to be mandatory; it should just be common sense.

Oh and yes, just try to outlaw smoking. It's bad enough here now with not being able to smoke in bars, even. Now they're talking about making it illegal to smoke in your own vehicle! Proponents of shit like that can just...eat shit and die.

I'm iffy on the seatbelt subject.

My grandma was in a car accident in which she was in a semi-truck's blind spot; he tried to come into her lane and her car got pinned under him. he dragged her so many feet, her car somehow flipped out from under it onto the other side of the freeway right in the path of ANOTHER semi-truck, which slammed into the side of her car and pushed her X-hundred feet before finally coming to a stop.

They told her after the accident that if she HAD been wearing her seatbelt she'd have been cut in half because of the ways the car was pushed and rolled....funny part is, the cop still cited her for not wearing it.

My boyfriend lived in Hawaii and was driving on one of the 3 highways that was on the island he lived on. He drove whatever fast car at over 120mph, blew a tire, and rolled 27 times. If he hadn't been wearing a five-point harness he'd have died.

This is why I sometimes wear mine and sometimes don't. You're taking a risk either way.

There's only a few situation where wearing a seatbelt would be more dangerous. In the more common accidents, like rear ending someone, or getting rear ended, its much safer to be wearing a seatbelt. For those types, it can make the difference between walking away scratch free, or getting a concussion/knocking some teeth out/or flying through the windshield.

But honestly, people should be able to decide for themselves whether or not they want to wear a seatbelt. Like they chose whether or not to drive a car with airbags. The only people they can hurt is themselves... unless they fly out the window and land on someone. That would be cool though.

Let me tell you all a story...

When I was in high school, this kid Jeremiah Linx was a skater. He got his first car, a big boat looking thing. He was not wearing his seatbelt. He ran into a telephone pole the same month he got his car. He was thrown out of the car. He died. It was a closed casket funeral.

Again

WEAR YOUR FUCKING SEAT BELT.

The main thing I hate about smoking in cars, is when you see little children in it with a parent (or even two at the same time) puffing away with the fucking windows closed... Hell, I even feel for poor dogs who go through the same damn thing...

I mean, an open window isn't perfect either, but there's really some big idiots out there who can't even do that.

I don't let anyone smoke in my vehicle without a window down, period. When I still smoked, I never smoked with my windows up. As a general rule, I never smoked around kids, either.

*steals cigs and runs for it*

Anyway, seatbelts are a good thing, in my opinion. I ALWAYS put on my seatbelt...especially when I drive. :happysad:

lol Yeah actually I quite often tend to not wear a seatbelt when I'm not driving, for some stupid reason. The thing is, though, by not wearing your seatbelt, you not only endanger yourself, but anyone else in the vehicle. If you're not wearing your seatbelt, and the vehicle rolls, you're either out a window, or being flung around inside the vehicle, potentially injuring or even killing other occupants.

As for smoking in the vehicle, yes, I should have added that I DO NOT agree with smoking in a vehicle with kids in it. Same as in a house with kids. Any enclosed space where kids are present at any given time. Hopefully I quit smoking before I get a family started.

Wearing a seatbelt should be a personal choice. If you wish to wear one, Great and grand for you. If you dont however you should have to pay for all your own medical bills should you get into an accident and require medical care.

And yeah, the cops are "Cracking down" on seatbelt violations... by cracking down i mean they are performing illegal roadblocks (Nice of the supreme court to rule road blocks are illegal) under the guise of "saftey checks" (The wording used to skirt the road block law) and they only do it durring certin days of the year because they can make money.

I've been driving almost as long as you've been alive, been in several severe accidents and a seat belt never helped me survive.

I realize they can help you, but I choose not to wear them on principle. Why don't I wear them? Cuz FUCK THEM, that's why. The government already governs enough of my life. Why should I cave to this rule as well? Aren't we (well, most drivers anyway) legal adults in the eyes of the law? If I know the consequences of my actions, why can't it be up to me?

I mean, what's next for us legal adults? Are they gonna tell us what to eat? What we can and can't read? What organizations we can or can't be a part of? Are they gonna make pornography illegal because it doesn't meet their hypocritical moral standards? What about sex ... are they gonna tell you that you have to use a condom except to procreate? Are they gonna monitor my e-mails, my phone calls, the websites I visit? The fact is, to a point, the government already does most of these things. It has its finger in almost everything, and that finger is pressing down.

I just think that some things should be left up to the individual, and this issue is one of them.

I also have a theory that a portion of the money raised from selt belt citations is laundered back to the insurance companies that probably got the law started in the first place. A way to make up for everyone sueing each other over accidents, wrongful death, etc.

And sorry about the banning tobacco comments... Jeez.

P.S. Jason, the reason I originally put this in the Dearly Detested forum is because I dearly detested getting the ticket. :D

Ok, it really doesn't hurt to wear your seatbelt. Just do it. Also the comment about paying taxes. What the fuck does that have to do with wearing your seatbelt? So you pay your taxes. Does that mean you exist? So someone that does not pay taxes, doesn't actually exist. So anyone listed under the term dependant technically isn't actually alive and there for has no right to anything.

Seatbealts save lives. Ther reason why the police are harder on the law during holidays is that's when people drink and drive. If they are going to drink and drive, at least if there's an accident to come out of that, they can only hope that if you or the drunk person and or the victom is wearing their seatbelt and survives the accident. So they watch for safety while driving whether the person is drunk or not.

About smoking in the car. be careful if you drive with the windows open and you are in one of the front seats. It's very easy to drop your cig out the window only to have it sucked back into the back seat and start a fire. The easiest way out of that is to butt out the cigarette butt before tossing it out the window. That way, no fires get started, no one gets their house burned down due the to the forest fire that got started from someone tossing their still lit cig out the window, it doesn't fall into the car behind you, and it doesn't continue to pollute the air. Same goes for people tossing cigarette butts out the back window. Don't get the the lame ass idea that just because you tossed it out the window, it's no longer your problem. The wind catches the cigarette. Cigarettes don't blow out very easily. In fact, the wind only makes it light up more so it's extremely easy to catch somethign on fire, such as dead grass. It's one of the main reasons why forest fires actually start up.

I actually had to call in a brush fire once. It was started by a cigarette. It was a windy day, and the fire was definitely just beginning to move. So please folks, butt out your cigarettes before littering the streets with them.

If you want to live in a fascist nanny state, then go ahead. I can do without seatbelt laws, drug laws, healthcare, and whatever else the government deems to be for "my own good".

But everyone else wants to have the government regulate how clean the McDonald's down the road needs to be (instead of just going to a cleaner restaurant), how many fire extinguishers should be in a given establishment, what kinds of drugs you're allowed to use, what cars you can drive, whatever.

I can do without the Government watching over me to make sure I wear a helmet when I ride my bicycle.

The rise of hte nanny state is phase 1 of the coming fascist (r)evolution.
