I'm searching for the title of a fiction/fantasy novel. The title includes the word "wing" or "wings." I believe it was written by a female author.
Plot (character names are my best guesses):
A cruel man buys young boys as slaves and takes them to his island. As the man nears death he chooses one boy - based on the way he handles the slave-labor, the beatings, and the other slave boys - to inherit the island and its treasure and become the next master.
The boy, the protagonist, instead steals the treasure and flees with his friend, Gareth. Upon reaching land the two boys go through a number of adventures including living in a small fishing village stuck between warring cities, a salt "farmer," and a local gold mine supplying the warring armies.
After moving on from this area they meet a girl Beryll. The protagonist marries and impregnates her along his way to becoming a lord of the land. However, the protagonist dies young and the story continues on as Gareth takes over for his best friend and lord, as well as becoming the guardian (possibly even lover) of Beryll and her child.
