SE Xperia X1 or HTC Dream

Ok, the Sony Ericsson X1 or HTC Dream? Both are the same price. Will be used primarily for cell phone, music and browsing while on wifi. Which one??

I would go with the Dream. The camera really sucks, but everything else on this phone is just fluid and beautiful.

The X1 I found to be laggy and just irritating.

You can go to a robbers store and ask to play with both, they usually have them =)

You know what I'm gonna have to disagree with Anna P. I was in this situation a couple of months ago, I chose the dream. It is a great device don't get me wrong, and it's really fun to use. But I found the browser to be buggy and very slow at times. With the X1 after downloading Opera the browsing experience is top notch. Using it as a cell phone the battery life blows the Dream out of the water hands down. I could hardly get a day out of my dream, but my X1 I can easily get a day out of my phone and more. Music on both phones is really good, but the advantage I would give to the X1 strictly for the 3.5mm jack. I'm not trying to knock the Dream it was a good phone, but I ended up selling it and getting an X1. I'm much happier with this phone than I was with the Dream. However, Windows Mobile does tend to turn some people off.

thanks Guys. My bias has always been towards SE, as historically I've always had good experiences with their phones. But after further reading, I'm wondering if a more fair comparison would be against the Magic rather than the Dream. Would both of your picks still be the same if it were the Magic vs the X1?

Once the G1 gets the Android 1.6 update, you can bet it will browse fast and strong. The built in browser is that good. In some ways, I already like over the iPhone Safari.

But do one better, go to the Android Market and download the Dolphin browser. Its not just faster but you can program your own set of customized gestures to do commands on the browser face. Like say, a touch circle for refresh.

BTW, Opera Mobile 10 beta 2 is out now, and it works wonderfully on both Symbian and Windows Mobile. Tested both versions. Probably the best mobile browser in the market now except for ---

The Dolphin browser on Android. This one is just jaw dropping.

Either way, I feel you won't miss on the browsing experience on either the G1 or X1, so long you got the right browser. I do feel the G1 or Magic has the advantage due to the larger screen 3.2" which is more responsive to the touch due to the capacitive nature. The X1 uses a resistive 2.8" screen that needs stylus but the resolutions is sharper so you can actually read tiny things.

I can agree with the comment regarding the screen size, I do wish it was a little bigger. however, as someone previously mentioned the resolution is great. With the Dream I got to say that I feel like it's not the browser itself that's laggy/buggy, the phone just doesn't have enough ram. But that's just an opinion. Either device you choose I think you'll be happy with.

Both don't seem to have enough RAM, and both are sibling cousins under the skin - yeah made by HTC on the same platform kind of the way GM makes so many models of cars from one platform. I feel both would handle browsing quite well with the recommended browser. However, they're not the most recommended devices on their respective platforms either.

I'd go with X1 if gotta have it now-now-now, but if you're willing to wait, the next crop of Android phones are gonna be sweer. The G1 is old hat. I like the X1's 3" 800x480 screen too along with the 3.5mm jack. :)

X1 has 256mb of ram the G1 only has 192mb, I know it doesn't sound like a lot but it makes a big difference. The Dream screen is not much bigger at 3.2" over X1's 3.0" but I can tell you the resolution is much better. What it is going to come down to is what OS you prefer, WinMo or Android. I also don't like how you have to root to install apps to sd card on the Dream.

The X1 also has a UI layered over Windows Mobile, so that kind of counters the extra memory. I got memory issues on my Diamond with Touchflo even with 288mb of RAM. The difference is that Android takes a much more aggressive policy towards memory usage. If memory is low, the app process is stopped and frozen, meaning it gets killed to loosen memory but the process state is preserved, so when its restarted, it starts exactly right where you left it or where it was killed (the iPhone has a similar mechanism).

There is an app that lets you install apps on the memory card, but the Dream without that app certainly has that problem.
