SE W600i or Samsung D807

I am not going to buy an unlocked phone. My service provider is Cingular and I am going to buy a Cingular "branded" phone. Now my question is, should I buy the Sony Ericsson W600i or the new Samsung D807?

Eh, don't really think so. It is fine if you are just using it to mess around, which is really pointless then. If you want to use it as an mp3 player then it isn't close to enough.

I had the SE W600i, actually I have it. It's about to get sent out to a buyer.

Why?

It was too fat (for me at least). The phone was almost 1" thick, which made it bulge from my pocket.

Other than that, I would recommend the W600i. The features are great, the phone is fast (between menus), and the speakers are excellent.

I signed on with Cingular with a w600i because I liked the looks and unique-ness of it. 6 months later my friend's dog ate it, so they gave me the d807 as an insurance replacement.

Having lived with both of them on a daily basis, I'd choose the d807 hands down. As deviantmotoSE points out, the Sony is FAT. Even in my work khakis it created quite the "unsightly bulge". In jeans, forget it. Also, the Sony has to be "keylocked" when not in use, otherwise it will start browsing the web or playing your mp3s while in your pocket. There's a handy pull-switch on the side to do this, but it becomes tedious to do this after every call. The d807 is much quicker to slide open and get down to business. Plus, the camera on the d807 is better and the eye-candy in the menus is cooler.

If you're looking for true mp3 player though, the Sony is the one to get. It was built with this purpose in mind, unlike the d807. The media player is easy to use and the Sony comes with decent headphones. My d807 came with no headphones and I have to order them for $15 from Samsung. Despite the advantage of expandable memory in the Samsung, the actual media player software is pretty utilitarian.

I love my d807, despite it's few minor quirks. But then again, I have a 30GB iPod for my music listening duties. I only use the phone at the gym.

I have the d807 because it fits in my pocket.

My wife has the 600i because it is the phone version of a Swiss Army knife and see carries it in her purse.

I had both phones and I would probably choose the d807 too. I liked the look and size of the d807 more. However, I had better reception with the w600i so there is a tradeoff.

The reception on the W600i is fantastic. I never got lower than 4-5 bars in my area. Every single feature on the phone is awesome. It's a shame it's so fat in these days of slim phones (exception: Nokia).

I'm looking at the same two phones but was wondering if there were any other options in the same price range(if they were purchased unlocked), maybe up to $50 more than these phones? My priorities are phone reception>mp3>size/form factor>camera. I'm leaning a little more towards the w600i due to all the features but am a little concerned with the size of it--i might get sick of lugging that brick around a year or so down the road. expandable memory is also not too big of a concern since i'll mainly be using it at the gym and 256mb should suffice. TIA.

edit: 850 band is a must.

w600 for sure! its loud, great reception and not that bad in thickness

the d807 is thin sure, but samsungs arent as loud, and they've been known to get dust under the screen alot, and frankly every samsung, ive had..the WORST...WORST battery life.

Im also consider both these phones and have couples of questions.

1. I heard that the w600i gets the white screen of death every once in a while...What with this?

2. How is the battery life on the D807?

3.I heard the camera on the w600i is crap but how is the one on the D807?

Would like some answers as soon as possible as I will be merging from AT&T to CINGULAR soon. Thanks

1. You usually get the WSOD because of the Cingular bundle or unpluging the USB cable from your computer improperly. A new update on SE's site will fix this.

2. Don't know, but I have the D820, and the battery life isnt great, about 2.5 days on standby and minimal calling.

3. I've had the W600i as well, and the camera isnt that bad. It's pretty good, but doesn't live up to it's 1.3mp advertisement.

Yeah I had the W600i

Probably one of the most amazing phones I ever had. It comes packed with features that i love and other people do too.

But The white screen of death scared the crap out of me. If the software of the phone was less buggy the phone would get a 10/10 on my opinion. The W600i is definitly the swiss army knife of phones tho hes right.

The D807 Hands Down. Much sleeker, awesome display and camera and the slide is much better than that stupid swivle. The sony was annoying locking it all the time like someone else said. I've used both and the d807 is my choice.
