SE-255 and HQ-500 cam comparison

From everything I've read about that 255, it's a torquey thing thats good for hauling a lot of weight.
I can tell you from personnel experiance that the HQ500 is a very good cam for the guy that runs the crap out of there bike like me, I ride one up on a RK that usually has no extra weigh and I love it.
It turned my boat anchor into a real machine and it sounds like a real machine also.

I'm no expert but have to say the dyno run with the 103' with 255's looks more like stock or stage one 103. Someone stated the stock 103 advertised 102 flb of tourqe if that is true and with about 10% loss thru the tranny those numbers look about right for stock. I am on a budget and currently debating the best steps to mod my stock SG and to tell the truth was thinking I could hit those numbers with a 255 camed 96. My question is for the guys that have a 255 camed 103 do those numbers look accurate? Like I said I am no expert.

Sath,
Not sure if this is accurate; I was reading a thread one day and it sounds like they work better in the 96 then the 103. My guess is that if the motors have different strokes, then the intake reversion wave in the throttle body may not be able to recover in time for the motor to take the big gulp of Charged A/F that it needs for the torque. (physics)...I probably don't know a damn thing. It's just speculation.

This is really going out their now. changing the length of the intake can greatly inhance the perfomance of any cam.

That may be why so many don't use the 255 cam with the 103 kit, they go with bigger cams. I seen some 255's in the classifieds yesterday. If your looking.

Can you compare these two charts since one shows HP and Torque in STD and the other shows HP and Torque in SAE, from what I understand STD readings are normally higher than SAE numbers. I'm considering a cam upgrade and trying to learn as much as I can.

I can tell you for a fact that the above dyno charts run #18 is NOT a properly tuned motor with 255 cams. I have dynod dozens of them in 96 and 103 motors with just about every bagger exhaust out there and they ALL made between 82-86 HP and 95-102 TQ with the exception of an old E-Series that wouldnt make more than 93 TQ.

500's WILL make more HP and pull a little farther up the RPM's 255's WILL make more TQ down low but fall off sooner.

For most peoples riding style either cam or any of the other comperable cams will work just fine, if you can pick up a set off used 255's from someone that has been convinced there are BETTER cams for dirt cheap, why pay more for something else?
