Se 120r complete engine?

ok guys I've been looking at this forum a couple of days now.
I have bought the 120R crate with all the stuff to put on new 2010 Ultra Classis.
order date 8/9/10 so let's see how long it really takes.
Dealership said I was the first one.ya think there's any truth to that?

yes, it's a complete motor minus the throttle body. that's only about 1500 bucks more than a "great" 103" build. the new 120" motor sounds like a lot of bang for the buck. i expect we'll be seeing them a lot in the near future.

Is it really that much cheaper?

Best thing about this is you have a whole extra motor when you're done, right?

Well, what about Pieces/partsing something together that would be the equal or surpass this build.

I've been compiling some parts lists Let's see if I forgot anything. Also using retail pricing.

124ci
SE Pro Crankcase assembly ................ $600
S&S 4.625" crank from Darkhorse ......... $1600
H-Beam Connecting Rods ................... $550
Axtell 4.125" Cylinder / Piston kit ..... $1200
R&R Cast Heads .......................... $1350
R&R 615 Cam .............................. $300
Roller Rockers ........................... $400
HPI 55mm throttle body ................... $600
High Flow Fuel Injectors ................. $140
Pushrods and Covers ...................... $200
Various Gaskets (estimating) ............. $160

Parts Total ................................... $7100

Assembly by a competent engine builder .. $1500 (rough guess)
Dyno Tune ................................ $300

Total in the bike and running ................. $8900

Contrast this with the SE120R
SE120R Motor ............................ $5500
Throttle Body ............................ $450
Intake Manifold ........................... $90
High Flow Fuel Injectors ................. $140

Total Parts ................................... $6180 (Only a thousand different!)

Installation into Chassis ................ $500
Dyno Tune ................................ $300

Total ......................................... $6980

You save on labor with the SE120R, so ~$2000 cheaper. But it won't be put together as tightly. Likely won't be as reliable or make as much power as the full build. And both scenarios leave you with a full extra motor to sell on ebay

So is the SE120R really such a deal? Am I forgetting something in my calculations?

Yes.....you're forgetting one very big factor in your calculations. You need to subtract out the entire engine you'll be swapping out with the 120R install which will likely be worth from around $2000 to 3000 even on Ebay depending on what motor is being swapped out. If you're building the 120 you have no engine to resell.

The difference in cost when you factor the resale with the 120R install makes a dramatic difference when compared to building a 120 out of your existing engine.

Nope. Everything in that 124 build I was talking about is new parts. So you'd still have a complete extra motor when you're done.

The way I was figuring it is if you do a 124 build you're replacing most everything but the crankcase. And that has to be machined. So just replace that too. It's only $600 in the screaming eagle catalog.
