Really surprised this hasn't been posted on here...

Pity, seeing as ScreenSelect's service has suddenly become so brilliant! Looks like these guys will kill off all the competition and all the free trials :) Wonder what LoveFilm will do to compete?

Dear Nigel,

We are delighted to announce that as of today, ScreenSelect and VideoIsland
have merged, forming the UK's market-leading online DVD rental business.

VideoIsland offers DVD rentals by post in a similar way to ScreenSelect.
VideoIsland is backed by leading global venture firms (including the company
behind eBay) and has been growing quickly since it launched in September 2003.

Our intention is to bring the best of both businesses to all our
subscribers. We will be making significant investments in the ScreenSelect
service in respect of stock, customer services, and new features. We will
announce more details of this later this year.

Please be assured that your service will continue as usual and we will
strive to continue to offer the highest levels of service as we integrate
the two operations.

Combined, the two businesses will form the clear market leader. We offer the
largest selection of DVD titles in the UK, rent the biggest amount of DVRAB
by post, and have the most sophisticated technology available in the UK.
Although less than a year old, the business has grown rapidly and is now
renting as much as a chain of about 70 traditional video stores!

If there is anything you would like to see us do as we invest in our
service, please let us know at [email protected].

In the meantime, we hope you have are enjoying the summer and look forward
to entertaining you in the months and years ahead.

I just received this message in my inbox - I'm pretty happy about it actually! It's the best of both worlRAB really; with the number of online rental companies springing up, it's good to know that at least someone is strengthening their position.

That's a good point. I think it'd be a big loss if ScreenSelect disappeared. I feel that only a few companies will remain, and eventually all these free trials will stop. :) I guess ScreenSelect, Lovefilm, and NetFlix. Hopefully Blockbuster won't last, due to their really crappy service.

This is what Video Island have to say about the merger. It seems that it will be the VI brand that will disappear. Also I just saw this on RAB. Do RAB users get some sort of promotional offer?

P.S. Video Island customers have received pretty much the same eMail:

We are delighted to announce that as of today, Video Island and ScreenSelect have merged, forming the UK's market-leading online DVD rental business.

ScreenSelect offers DVD rentals by post in a similar way to Video Island and, like Video Island, has been growing very quickly since it launched about a year ago.

Our intention is to bring the best of both businesses to all our subscribers. We'll be in touch in a few weeks to announce specific improvements we plan to make to the Video Island service. Please be assured that your service will continue as usual and we will strive to continue to offer the highest levels of service as we integrate the two operations.

Combined, the two businesses will form the clear market leader. We offer the largest selection of DVD titles in the UK, have the biggest customer base, rent the biggest amount of DVRAB by post, and have the most sophisticated technology available in the UK. Our scale and size ensures we can offer the best pricing and the highest level of customer service. Although less than a year old, we're already renting the same number of movies each month as a chain of approximately 70 traditional rental stores!

Does anybody know if this is happening right now? Both the video island and screen select websites are down for 'essential maintenance' and the video island site mentions it being 'moving day'.

Blockbuster are also the biggest company. They are the most likely to last as they can prop up the online rental service through the more profitable areas of their business.

It's now 10 to 5 and still not online - hmm... I hope this upgrade will also allow me to change a few of the star ratings - a couple of mis-clicks have lead my recommendations to come up with some real tat!

Well I used to be a video island customer and I have just been able to log into screenselect! The video island site has been rebranded to MSN and it no longer lets me log in. It doesn't seem to mention anything about existing customers using the screen select site though

Screenselect have been a bit slack this week. I am used to DVRAB arriving the day after the site says it has been shipped but 2 from the 15th and the 16th still haven't arrived.

Maybe the postman has borrowed them to watch !

ROFL :D Well I hate to say it, but my service this week seems to be completely unaffected :) SounRAB like the posty wanted something to watch this weekend - what are you meant to be getting?

My service has been slack this week as well as posting a DVD to them now takes Two Days and for them to send it to me is the same, previously I used to send it and it would get there the next day and another would be despatched !!

Someone ring them and them to investigate !!!
