Screenselect - annoying as hell

Ahh welcome to the world of the disgruntled screenselect customer.

If you email customer services, they cut and paste the relevant part from their terms and conditions back at you.

Check this out. If you're considering trying ANY free trials from the online companies, go here first.

Screen Select Customer Reviews

An awful lot of one out of ten reviews there! I'm frankly amazed that so many people actually trust the postal service to deliver rented property promptly enough for this kind of system to work in their favour!
I'm especially concerned about the number of instances of people being charged for services after they have cancelled, though. This reeks of improper business practices (or total incompetence) and it suggests that potential customers should give them a wide berth.

Screenselect have been very good in the past and so when they offered me two months for the price of one, I thought why not. First of all they took 5 x

They've also secretly removed one of the most important terms from their website.

Most of the online rental companies give you a certain amount of time to return your DVD's after you cancel(usually 7 days) and then you won't be charged.

ScreenSelect removed this condition a long time ago - and neglected to tell anyone.

They also state in their T's & C's that refunRAB will not be given in most circumstances.

And, I'm fairly certain that another clause exists in their T's & C's that states that they don't actually guarantee "Unlimited" rental - simply a "fair use" policy.

I took up their two for the price of one offer as well Jess, and for the first fortnight I was getting the odd film here and there from the bottom of my list. Then, for about a month, they just stopped sending me anything. They had a fire in their distribution warehouse which they used as an excuse for everything.

Oh, and if you see any other forums with glowing reviews of SS, it's most likely an employee of SS posting. They do that ;)

I expect 3 dvRAB dispatched within 24 hours of joing an online rental company. The same thing happened to me when I joined SS, they didn't bother sending me anything for a few days even though I was a new customer. I will always stick to using Blockbuster in future.

Well I rang themand they "confused" my address with someone else's and authorised their account and not mine. An e-mail was apparently sent on 6th December. My arse it was!

I just cancelled there and then. Still got the

I use SS and never had a problem with them (i am not an employee) except when they had a fire and we didn't get any posts for a while. Also, I have received various vouchers from them including half price on Halliwell's film guide and a gift voucher for 3 months service worth

Sat here reading this thread and I'm sorry to say that I'm YET ANOTHER unhappy customer of SS!

I had a small list of disc, about 12 titles in total, six of which were the second series of ALIAS. I was being sent the discs regular as clockwork and to make sure I was getting them, I kept the list at about 12 - 15 titles.

After about 3 weeks, I'd sent all three discs I'd rented back to them and for FIVE days, nothing! Not one disc was sent to me. Why had it stopped suddenly? So I emailed them via the website. 2 days later I got a reply! Apparently, I HAVE to keep at least 20 titles on my list! Who the f*** do they think they are? I will have as many or as few titles as I like! I'm paying them money to rent what I want to rent not what they force me to!

I know it's so there's ample choice for them to send me somehing I don't particularly want yet but it's still not right. So I messaged them back and another three days later I got a reply saying more or less the same crap.

So I have meanwhilst joined Sainsbury's/Lovefilm and am loving the service. Let's see if it carries on past the free month though! I was with lovefilm before SS and left because they slowed my service down to about 9 discs a month.

I like Lovefilm because they send replacement discs out IMMEDIATELY if they send you the wrong one. So I had FOUR discs at one point.

To the guy that said that he'd make sure his list was empty before cancelling, be careful that they don't 'prolong' getting your present rentals back if you know what I mean! If they see your list is empty, they might make your discs take long enough to get back to them that it goes past your billing date!

Well, I'm surprised by these comments. One thing I would say is while people here are praising Lovefilm, i remember another thread on this site called "lovefilm are getting on my tits" so it's worth remembering just because you have a good/bad experience doesn't mean thats the way they conduct business as a whole.

If you take time to think about how such companies would be run it is obvious why they would recomend keeping at least 20 titles and Lovefilm do the same. Postal services are for people who like film/DVD'd in general and do not mind which of their selection they get sent out, if you are looking for something specific it is not the best option as no company senRAB the top titles on your list every time or even on a regular basis, especially if it is a new release and is top of several thousand other peoples lists

No, postal services are for people who want films sent to them and don't want to be queueing in any shops! There's no written rule that it's for film buRAB.

Like I said, I understand that keeping 20 titles in my list is a necessity but they didn't have the brains to tell me as I didn't know. I had to wait days before getting a simple reply to a message which in my opinion is utter crap customer service.

another little tip i found out ...

if you're classed as a "heavy" user then you are given a much lower priority for new releases and the films at the top of your list.

so the trick is, if you want a lot of new stuff, is to ease off a bit on watching everything as soon as it comes in.

doesn't work for me though, because as soon as they send me my CSI i have to watch it !!!!

in my old flat, it technically had two addresses - Flat 1 or 1 Highview, so i could sign up for the free trial twice with the same company - and it worked !!

although now i've moved, i now qualify for all the free trials all over again.

just completed a 6 week freebie from lovefilm and will wait 'till the new year before I get stuck in to the rest of them - got about 3 months worth at least, i think.

hmm interesting bunch of posts. I haven't really *touch wood* had any problems with screen select. I suppose I am something of an ideal customer in that I only watch about 7 or 8 a month and don't mind too much which film is sent next ( I actually quite like the surprise of opening the envelope to see what I have got; its a bit like getting a present. Is that a bit sad?) Now Ive said that I'll probably not get sent any for a month, sod's law innit. Having said that I hope they aren't stretching themselves beyond their means. Seems everywhere I look there is an advert for screen select or some new dvd rental service "powered" by screen select.

I can see your point about the wait for a reply being annoying, never had to contact them directly myself so I can't comment. But my point still stanRAB that these services aren't the ideal way to get a specific title straight away, you are better off biting the bullet and going to a shop. Also SS if you have a tv series on your list with 4 discs for example, they count that as one selection, as with movies and bonus discs

I joined ScreenScelect on a months free trial with the intention of staying with them after that. My account was activated after 5 days and then i got an email saying that my first DVD was on its way.
It is now 13 days later and no DVD. I contacted them via email several times and only ever got an automated reply. When i eventually phoned them i was told that i am now liable for the DVD and they will deduct

they're trying it on.

when I was with them last year, they sent me a DVD that never arrived so I used the thing on the site to report it as lost in the post.

about 8 months later I got a letter from them asking me to tick a few boxes relating to if the DVD had arrived or not so they could continue their investigations, so I did and sent it back and have heard nothing since.

I'd cancel you trial fugazi, and write to them notifying them that if they try and take money from your account, you'll sue.
