Carol,
As you stated, you're probably just doing it "too perfectly". I've been using the same Brando protector for 18 months now, and had removed, washed, and reinstalled it several times.
My experience is that the more I try to install it "perfectly", the more "bubbles" I get. The bubbles look obvious initially when the Palm is off, but you can hardly see it when the screen is on (it also disappears after a few days of use). My protector is full of deep scratches that are visible when my unit is off, but are hardly noticeable when it is on.
I use eyeglass cleaner cloth/liquid to clean the screen. I also use scotch tape to lift off any lint that adheres to the sticky side before installation. It's also best to stick about 2-inch scotch tape on the outer side for you to hold on in positioning the protector (it also comes in handy when you have to lift it off again, and again, when it's misaligned).
Scotch tape is also useful in removing the protector for cleaning. Stick it on either side and lift it up slowly (this way you avoid "bend-marks" on the edges that become permanent).
Going back to the Brando brand, I am very impressed with its durability and ability to retain its adhesives even after multiple washing. It's full of scratches now, but my screen is still flawless.
