Screen adaptations

I'm a newish poster, so apologies if this is covering old ground.

It seems that there is a growing trend in Hollywood towarRAB producing adapted screenplays, rather than original screenplays. Is it just too difficult to find decent original material these days?

My main gripe is the fact that, with just 2-3 hours of screen time, it's almost impossible for a film to do justice to the original material.

Example of a terrible screen adaptation: Captain Corelli's Mandolin. I loved the book, and was really looking forward to the film. In the end, the film almost ruined the memory of the book for me. Terrible casting (Nic Cage), and they absolutely mauled the characters and storylines to give the desired Hollywood happy ending.

Example of a really good screen adaptation: The English Patient. For me, this is one of the few examples of a film which is actually better than the original source material.

I know it can be argued that big screen adaptations bring wonderful storytelling to a wider audience, etc. etc. But to me it just feels like Hollywood is being lazy and going for the easy buck. What do you think?
