I think you should read the books. I don't know how deeply the film goes into it, so I wouldn't wanna spoil anything.

To put it simply, they all represent crucial moments in Ramona's life. Obviously no one is born evil, and the question arises as to whether or not Scott is an evil ex-boyfriend waiting to happen.

To answer another question, they're in a "league", so there are rules about how they approach him. For example, not all at once, but not necessarily one at a time.
 
A good way to look at it is visual metaphor: because of Scott's narcissism and exposure to video games, we see what he sees in everyday things. So instead of having to work through the baggage of his new girlfriend, he has to be a hero and defeat her seven "evil" exes.

Edgar Wright even said it's similar to a musical in that, when emotions run high enough, characters break into song -- only, in Scott Pilgrim, they're fights, not songs.
 
Omg, I saw this film today and it's AMAZING! I loved all the videogame references in the film, and I just had a huge smile on my face throughout the entire film. I would highly recommend this film to anyone even remotely interested in it! :D
 
Saw it on Wednesday night, absolutely loved it. It's very rare that I've ever enjoyed an adaptation of a book/comic/tv series that I already loved, normally I'd be picking holes in it all over the place or complaining about good bits that were left out. Despite the fact that some good bits from the books were left out, the film captured the feel and spirit of them perfectly. I thought that Kieran Culkin was perfect as Wallace Wells, in particular.

There was only one slight issue I had, which Edgar Wright addressed when he came in to the cinema for a surprise Q&A after the screening I went to (which was amazing!). The film starts to differ from the books about three quarters of the way through, because they were still being written at the time the film was in production. It's pretty clear that towarRAB the end, the film is moving towarRAB one conclusion (which Wright confirms was originally filmed and was controversial with test audiences) before suddenly switching back to a different ending, which is a bit more similar to the books. It's a bit weird that it's hinting one way before going another.

But anyway. Overall, a great film and an excellent adaptation. Absolutely wonderful music by Nigel Goodrich and Beck, too.
 
I have been waiting for this film for a long time now (being an big fan of the original comic) and they have finally released a trailer :D

Anybody else catch it?
 
watched it... can't quite work out whether I would go see it though.. looks a bit silly. A bit like what Kick-Ass would have looked like if it had gone wrong.
 
I thought it was funny, but not as amazing as the hype suggests. I did get the references too (loved the Legend of Zelda soundtrack in one part!).

I think it took itself too seriously for what it was. And I didn't find Ramona all that likeable...
 
Im looking forward to this, dunno if it will top Superbad or even Kickass. Superbad is my ultimate fav out of all these types of films but kickass comes a close second.
 
I have a friend who would want to ask the same questions, but, even though we're the same age, he's considerably "older" in his sensibilities than I am.

I saw it this morning and I loved it. I'd buy it on blu-ray in a heartbeat.

I might even take my friend to see it just to watch him squirm :)
 
I liked it for the most part, and I'm not a geeky 25 year old :p

What made it stand out was the effects, tone and styling of the film in my eyes. It was just handled so differently and so well. I can see why people think it has the potential to be a modern cult classic, it's found it's niche and they will love it. It was never going to be the kind of film that struck it big in the box office.

I think you could tell that some were expecting it to be a Juno/Superbad type of indie-comedy, purely because of Michael Cera. It did have the off-beat, often understated witty humour...but it wasn't so much quotable one-liners that had you laughing out loud, it was more just grinning every now and then.

People seemed surprised when the quirky comedy tone turned into the comic book-esque game fighting. There was quite a bit of '....ook?! :eek:' giggling going on when the first ex attacked SP. A semi-musical number with manga-esque fighting sequence was a bit out of the blue, granted.

I agree that the last third of the film fell a bit flat. Not entirely sure why that was. Maybe it just got a bit too action-y for my taste? Thought the final ex was a bit anti-climatic too.

Enjoyed Wallace. Refreshing to have a gay character that drives their own humour rather than serving as 'the joke' itself.
 
Absolutly loved this after watching it last night, i'd hyped up the film big to myself and it didn't dissapoint ^_^, i'm actually seeing it again in a few hours with frienRAB lol.

Had a massive grin on my fave all the way through the film, i'm actually excited to see it again so soon, Knives was amazing :)
