Scientific/Mathematic extremely frustrating"Riddle"!?

Alright, so my math teach told me this riddle thing and it's really getting to me. I can not figure it out for the life of me.

Here it is....

You take a string and tie it around the diameter earth. You take it off and add 50 yards onto it and tie it back around the earth. How far is it off the ground?

Any ideas guys?!?!?
 
It's still touching it...the earth has an uneven diameter, so this time, you could wrap it around by going over Mount Everest. Just an idea.
