I dont get it. Why the hell do colleges give out so many scholarships for sports!?! I mean a Freshman at my highschool recieved 6 yes SIX scholarships in the last week alone for his X-country ability. I mean wtf!?! How is that going to matter in someones life. Why the hell do so many dumbass (no offence to football players or any sport players) football/sports players get in so easy just because they can play a GAME!?!!
I know there are many other scholarships and many of them piss me off. I dont understand why some one can get a scholarship because they are of a certain race or sex. I mean seriously sure in the past they might have needed it because of discrimination (sp?) but now that gives them an unfair advantage. I mean I am a white male that doesnt play sports.. or atleast is not good. That leaves me depending on my grades to get me a scholarship. My family isnt rich. Most likely I'll end up spending the rest of my life paying off college loans when the dumbass high school sports star thats baggin' my food at the local store got in free.

I did not mean to offend anyone but I just needed to get it off my chest.

I completely agree with you, the scholarship system is complete bullshit for sports and race.

It should STRICTLY be given on grades, after all that's what school is for.

Scholarships should be givin to individuals who can't otherwise afford it.

I think the reason it is mainly given to football players is all the money that college football makes. It goes straight to the colleges, and if they want to keep making that money they need fresh new amazing players to push their school.

Who would've EVER thought that about athletes and scholarships.....

Anyways, I don't believe it should be done as you say. My family can afford to send me to college, but couldn't do so without cutting back on some things. What makes the people that didn't work for there money any better than my family, who works hard day in and day out? That's right, they are NO BETTER than me. So, why should they get free handouts when I don't get any because my family works?

Janglenut you are a smartass and if I was Donald Trump and you were an apprentice on my NBC show The Apprentice I would fire you :reddevil:

To answer,
I will not argue with someone who tries to break this dilemma down to such subjective stereotypes.

You won't answer because you cannot handle the truth. Scholarships shouldn't be based on how much money a person has, they should be based upon grades. Nothing else. Period.

I think the idea is to reward someone for excelling in a certain area. You act like like all jocks will just slide by their entire college career. That's a cute stereotype, but not necessarily true. There are a lot of private scholarships as well, so they can offer them for whatever reason they see fit. There should be no argument there. I think scholarships that reward academic achievement are great, but sports plays just as large a part in some people's lives.

As for the person who said that they should be granted based upon need, there are a lot of other programs out there that do just that. FAFSA and Pell grants are available to anyone, granted they fall under the required income level. Federal student aid loans are also available. There really is no excuse for not going to college these days, money shouldn't be an issue. It's often used as an excuse though.

Who the fuck are you, Tom Cruise?

You are right though. I completely neglected to remember what exactly Scholarships are. I was thinking more along the lines of FAFSA (Which Junglizm kindly prompted).

Seriously though, I will always think of Tom holding a baseball bat whenever I think of you. :)

story-

my sis is extremely smart, i mean shes training to be a clinical psytologist (genetics) and has spent at least 6 or 7 years in different colleges(expensive ones too).

Well back in high school she was friends with this stupid slut that was going against her for a certain scholarship that mainly focused on how much your parents made ( if you were broke or not). This thing was like $45,000. My dad was a school teacher at another school, and my mom a secretary at one of the elementaries around town. So obviously theres not much money in my family. Well the other chick's dad was some high and mighty asshole in society (cant remember what he did), and this is a small town so shes got the upperhand. I know he made much more than my dad, so therefore this chick lied about their "money problems", and she ended up getting it.

4-5 years later, my sis runs into her in the town she went to college in (A&M) and all shes doing with her life is living off her parents and getting drunk and fucked in bars every weekend.

just goes to show i guess...

That's called a "Grant" Lot's of them out there.

Athletic scholarships are so big because yes, athletics brings in the money. Every time a college team is aired on ESPN that college gets between $250,000 and $300,000. So let's take Boise State University as an example here. The coach is the highest paid state employee for Idaho pulling down somewhere aroung $500,000 a year base sallary. BUT, his team was on ESPN 8 times last year so he brought in roughly 2 MILLION bucks. They played in a secondary college boal and got to split 14 MILLION with their conferance. AND the stadium they play in seats nearly 30,000 people. Of that nearly 25,000 people pay an average of $15 a seat. That's $375,000 per game and there were something like 6 home games for a grand total of $2,250,000.00 But they can't do that without really good players and to get those players they need to offer a number of scholarships.

Saddly, acedemics doesn't bring any money into the schools. Athletics does.

But as Jung said, there are LOTS of scholarships out there. Frankly, if you're willing to look hard enough, there are enough scholarships in this country that you can get a free ride to any school of your choice. I had a $1,500 per semester scholarship from some foundation for soap. Why'd I get it? I was the only one that applied. Most scholarships are structured so that if a qualified person applies that scholarship MUST be awarded.

Here are a few I heard about when I was in college:
The soap one I had.
One for guys that grew up on farms
One for guys who grew up on DAIRY farms
One for horse riders
One for Dodge owners
One for women returnning to school after 5 or more years away
One for fathers of 3 or more children
One for the daughter of a garbage man

There are thousands of them out there that aren't tied to academics, income OR athletics.

edit: stupid typo
