Hi All,
I'm new on here and I was basically just wondering if anyone had any information regarding Sheurmanns. I'm 36 yrs old and have been in terrible pain for almost a year now, after an x-ray I was informed that this disease was the root of the problem but other than that I cant seem to find out anything else. I have had acupunture and physio neither of which has helped. I have now been told to try yoga which may prove difficult concidering the amount of pain I am in. I think the biggest problem is that no-one in my area seems to know a great deal about this illness or its long term effects, so any info from anyone on here would be appreciated. Sorry for the long post but I'm at my wits end.

My name is Leland. I was diagnosed with scheuermanns at 21 years of age. I am now 45 almost 46. I am sorry to hear about your pain. I too have had a difficult time finding any VALUABLE information about this condition. Stretching the hamstring muscles is one that I agree with. It does help a little. I have spent 15 years rolling on baseballs, footballs, and many other devices. Ive seen every Dr.and quack I could find. The Scandinavian Dr's told me I had scheuermanns in the early 80's. All the Dr's in the U.S. I consulted, couldnt repeat that diagnosis until my late 30's. I have been told opposite things from several sources. Ive been told "dont pop your back anymore at all" by a famous and very well respected Dr. The Scandinavian Dr's told me to pop my back over and over again until it stops popping. Just one example of many conflicting answers. I cant say any of it is bad advice. All I can say is what has helped me deal with scheuermanns on a daily bases. Exercise is good in a general way. Exercises recommended to me by all Doctors and quacks have only caused me more pain and discomfort providing no help only pain. Pain meRAB dont work. Street drugs dont work. Anti inflame meRAB dont work very well. Zanax/alprasalam has helped me. Dr's prescribe those for anxiety only! (fyi) The 1 thing that I find works the best is STIMULATE STIMULATE STIMULATE. Not excersise but stretching, accupressure on muscles. Push on muscle until it relaxes. I use many things to do this. Im not fragile so some of these things might not be a good idea for others. I lay on baseballs, footballs, even rolling up and down on a basketball. Wooden or iron staircase railings with a round knobs always temp me. If something you do physically relieves pressure or pain start with that. Stretching over soft pillows or stable foam rollers even tennis balls for 10 or 15 minutes can provide enough relief to allow me to get through a couple more hours of the day. Best advice I ever heard is STIMULATE STIMULATE STIMULATE. Stay active but keep it soft. Dont jog, walk. Dont do things that jolt your body, but do things that stimulate. Don't bounce when stretching, but stretch slow and consistant. I would recommend to anyone to purchase a book on the art of stretching. Then use only the stretches that bring relief. Scheuermanns is a progressive desease that only gets worse with age. I know. Thirty years of pain allows me to say it. Stimulation slows it down. If anyone finRAB a cure be sure to tell me!!!!

Hey Leland
I was interested to read your story
I am 47 and was only just diagnosed with old scheurmanns this week. Its taken 30 years just to get the diagnosis at vast expense of time and money.
I saw hundreRAB of healers and doctors and tried everything I can think of to no avail at all. Saw tons of people who diagnosed me wrong and told me stupid or misguided things
Like you I lie on balls and things- my house is filled with things to roll on- balls of different sizes, cushions etc. I went for a walk the other day and saw logs stacked up in a shape that I knew would feel good, so I rolled over them for a while, and will get some logs and create a similar structure in my garden. Pressure on the rounded spine is the only thing that gives temporary relief - relieving the pressure.
My curve is not that big so doctors tend not to take me seriously and believe I am in so much CONSTANT pain now for 30 years. There is a mild scoliosis as well, degenerative discs, tmj and schmorls nodules- but I believe the scheurmanns is the key to the rest
I am looking at surgery as an option - now I have a proper diagnosis and location of the wedged vertebrae I have finally a way forward. There is a guy in st louis who is an expert on surgery for scheurmanns

I live in UK
