Scenic road trip from San Francisco to San Diego... any suggested routes,...

...camping, stops along the way? Quick trip to southern CA and back up, a Californian that has never seen much of California... thinking a stop at Big Sur, Hearst Castle... looking for recommendations or suggested itineraries for a short round trip to San Diego
 
You're right to drive thru Big Sur. Its the most beautiful stretch of coastline in California. There is good camping there. Monterey has is kinda cool downtown around the aquarium. So does SLO. Jalama is a nice spot in Santa Barbara. LA is kind of a mess, I'd opt to drive straight thru and camp in San Clemente or Carlsbad. Once into SD I'd be sure to check out Balboa Park.

Be sure to check for reservations at campsites as this is the beach season.
