Scary Films

I'm looking for a list of old and new scary films to get in time for halloween, not really interested in slasher films though, so if anyone has any suggestions then i'm all ears.

Im not sure if this counts as a slasher film but The Strangers is really good. Not the average "oh no, he's going to get you" type. It freaked me right out.

Just seen the trailer for The Strangers. They are in America. Why don't they get a couple of pump action shotguns from Wal-Mart and blow those "strangers" away? :D

Everytime someone mentions The Strangers, I always recommend seeing a film that came out before it called Them/Ils, a creepy French film that is very good and VERY similar to The Strangers.

Them/Ils will make a very good film to watch.

One to cuddle up to someone, freaked out imo. :)

Also recommend the Spanish film The Orphanage, VERY GOOD film.

Also, I don't know if it's out in England, but the film Session 9 is extremely creepy also, and if easily scared I would assume this film would do the trick.

Can't recommend Session 9 nearly enough! Bone-chillingly creepy, thanks to it's claustrophobic & suffocating atmosphere throughout. Together with excellent acting & truly the very best Horror location I have ever seen! (Just check this out to see what I mean - http://tinypic.com/r/5br9qt/4) The only film that has freaked me out quite as much would have to be The Shining. Now that really is saying something. Hunt it down right now!

1) Don't be Afraid of the Dark LINK
I haven't seen this movie in a very long time but it scared me silly when I was a kid!

2) Salem's Lot (1979 Version) LINK
It's still one of the scariest "vampire" films ever made!

3) Phantasm LINK

Bar the screamer
the old biddy after she was run down
I didn't think it was scary at all, if anything quite a sad film.

For scary films Salem's Lot, Dawn of the Dead (2004 remake) and The Howling would get my vote.

'The Haunting'
The 1963 original with Julie Harris and Claire Bloom, not the p**s-poor remake with that Zeta-Jones bint in it.

Immensely atmospheric, and VERY spooky - watch it alone in the dark, and you won't sleep that night.
You never actually 'see' the ghost - it's all shadows and noises - but that just makes it scarier. Your imagination can scare you far more than anything they could show on screen.

A sample 'spooky' moment
