The Descent put the proveribal poopie up me
Probably the originals of Psycho and The Haunting.
Your own imagination can come up with much worse from the hints in those films that any modern director can get come up with.
Mind you, Scream 2 scared the living daylights out of me - when I got up the morning after seeing it in the cinema, realised my flatmate hadn't come home the night before, and the door had been unlocked all night!

The scariest film so far this year I think is the Descent! It just had everything it needed to be scary.
The scariest film ever, although I don't get scarred easily, was probably Halloween, not just because of the death scenes, but the music! *eeeek!*
The Blair Witch was a crap film, it was just the thought of it that was scary!
I saw Red Eye recently too, that was very edge of your seat stuff!

TBH - i was really dissapointed with House of 1000 Corpses, wasnt as good as i hoped. But on the other hand....
The trailer looked utter crap, but it was only when i heard it was the same people as that Dog Soldiers i conceded to watch it. What a bloody good and tense film!
(PS, some of the actors out of Devils Rejects, Pinhead, and (bow down) George A Romero are going to be at the next Sci Fi convention at the Birmingham NEC in November

I remember watching Halloween when I was 4 and loved it in a terrible "why did you let me watch this" sort of way.
Michael Myers was just a scary villain and that music and the big huge American houses and gardens.
Nearly 30 years on I still have a sneaking suspicion that one day I'll be impaled on the kitchen wall.
Nowadays I prefer suspenseful films as most modern horror is just terrible. Things like Sixth Sense or What Lies Beneath are pretty good.
The last time I was genuinely on the edge of my seat was The Blair Witch Project, truly terrifying. I remember two weeks after watching that I had to walk 2 miles through a wooded lane at about 11pm and a plastic bag blew from behind, up over me and got caught in the branches just infront of me. Scared the life out of me because of BWP.

It's funny isn't it, Blair Witch didn't scare me at all, not in the slightest. The Japanese "The Ring", on the other hand, totally spooked me out. I think a lot depenRAB upon your state of mind when you watch the film.
I recall when i first watched American Werewolf in London, that spooked me out too. I had to walk through a large wooded park on the way home. I could swear to this day that there was a werewolf watching me from the darkness.

Being an oldie I can admit that Hitchcock's The BirRAB terrified me more than any other film since ... and I love horror movies. It still holRAB its own even after all these years.

Oh totally agree, Black Christmas is a wonderful film, one of my favourites in the slasher sub genre. Creepy Creepy indeed.
Talking of creepy, someone mentioned Creep, I was disappointed with Creep, let down. And the acting from Potente(sp?) was not up to scratch like she is in other films.

I tihnk it depenRAB who you watch it with. When I went, I could see why people found it so scary/creepy, but my mates and I had been to the pub before going and they just took the piss all the way through which was quite offputting, so it didn't get the chance to have the same effect on me.

Suspiria - ok, it has not dated well but again, a milestone in terror.
