Scared....

About 2 months ago I went to the allergist for tests to find out why I'm always stuffy. He had some blood tests taken and about a month ago he said that everything was fine. Then today he called me because he said that one of the blood tests shows inflammation in my body. He said that the normal level is 0-20 and I was at 34. He said that it shouldn't be super alarming ("if it were 70 I'd be worried" he said). I asked what was inflamed and he said that he couldn't tell by just blood work. He asked that I come in for a follow up visit to run more tests to see if it lowered, stayed the same or had risen. He said it wasn't urgent but to come in within the next few weeks. I've been trying to research what exactly these results mean but I'm not even sure what test he is talking about and I did find the CRP test but I'm completely unfamiliar with this. Now I'm really panicked and worried that something might be wrong. He doesn't seem overly worried but I'm also not sure why he called me directly after 2 months. Has anyone ever heard of something like this?

Sounds like a SED rate (also called ESR).

A SED rate of 34 is a slight increase, and almost anything can slightly increase your SED, simple stress, a cold, allergies, not sleeping well, etc. I think you have a conscientious doc who's just double checking to make sure you're OK.

BTW, chronic stuffiness could be caused by a deviated septum or turbinate hypertrophy. Treatment is surgery to fix the septum and/or reduce the turbinates (bony structures). I'm thinking of having this procedure done, I can't sleep at night from the stuffiness!

Depends on what blood test was run. You don't say so it's hard to say. While the previous poster poses one, another would be a blood allergy test which cold have shown elevated eosinophils which really means nothing more than you have allergies. Blood tests for allergies - environmental ones - is not as effective as the skin scratch test. You really need to know more about the test - what is was and what it is for.

Thanks guys! I'm really not sure what tests he ran. I know the week before he did allergy testing on my back and arms and then he sent me for routine allergy bloodwork and also checked my thyroid. When everything came back he said it was ok. Then he called today and let me know that one of the tests (he didn't specify and I forgot to ask) came back showing inflammation. All I know is he said the normal level was 0-20 and mine was 34. I'm generally healthy aside from allergies and congestion so of course I'm worried. I have an appt on 10/15 with him so hopefully I can find out more.
