SAW V - Official Spoilers Discussion (UK)

I watched this yesterday, it was ok, but a bit all over the place. The 5 people in the game just seemed to be there for the sake of it, rather than being a real part of the film and the premise of working together was obvious from the start. There were a number of bits I found a bit stupid and a bit irritating now. I do hope VI is the last one and it's all wrapped up, as it's starting to drag now, but I have a feeling they'll drag it on and on and on. The problem with the US films/series is they don't know when to stop when it makes money, like Lost, Prison Break etc.

This was the first one I've watched at the cinema and I think I'll just wait for the DVD in future, but then I'm not a horror fan, so even if I couldn't watch a bit I could still hear the bones breaking surround sound :o I do like the Saw series becuase it has a plot rather than pointless gore, but it does seem to be running out of ideas a bit and dragging

Someone dies in a fairly gruesome way :p

I saw it last night, and feel exactly the same as I did after Saw 4.

My initial reaction was "is that it" but then the more ive thought about it, the more i liked it if that makes sense.

Saw 4 I came out of the cinema thinking it was rubbish, but enjoyed it so much more the 2nd time I saw it,and actually really like it now.

I think my only disapointment was for some reason I thought this was the last Saw movie, and so I was expecting it to be a cracking ending to the series, and obviously, those who have seen it know it can't possibly be the end.

I kind of agree with the person who said that they didn't care much about the 5 people, which was a shame because the premise was interesting, but I thought it was pretty obvious
that they were all supposed to survive it together from the very first trap.

The film did its job and its still going okay for the 5th installment but I really hope there building us up to a brilliant last film, and I hope that last film is soon.

If you put this in the context of a TV series, rather than a movie series, then I think this would best be described as a reasonably decent filler episode.

IMO, the focus wasn't supposed to be on those 5.
It seemed to be more of a sub-plot to the rest of the story.

Apparently, this film was directed by the same guy who directed 1. The writers felt the director of 2-4 was making it too much of a "gorefest".

these films are quite ridiculous - they've ruined the memory of the excellent first one

haha in the first one the traps were simple and ingenious. NOW they look like they required 50 men to help set them up

The 5 People trap was unusual partly because it had two survivors, who seemed to be improved by it. From the first 4 films I think Amanda is the only other person who survived a test, and although she too was improved, she backslid later. In his own terms, Jigsaw is not successful.

One thing I like about the series is how Jigsaw's traps have developed in complexity and scale. In the earliest ones he confronts the victim directly - which we see him do with Hoffman in V, and although that may have been to recruit him, it did date it in the chronology. Later he develops the puppet and the tapes. The bathroom trap in Saw I was a step above what had gone before, since it involved several people and locations. In II we have even more people being tested in the nerve gas house, and although the real purpose of this is to test Mathews the nerve gas section is carried out in advance which makes it more manageable. III and IV are actually concurrent and Jigsaw is now juggling with many balls at once: Jeff's several traps, the trap room Hoffman is in, Rigg's tests, Lynn's tests, and Amanda's test. He still finRAB time to record a specific message for Perez.

The 5 People trap was similar to the nerve gas house in that it was about cooperation. At least some of the specific nerve gas traps would have been easier if they'd worked together more. In particular, the numbers on the back of the head puzzle would have been trivial if they'd cooperated. When Xavier decided that he'd rather slice his own skin off than ask someone else to look for him, I thought that was awesome, and V was disappointing in comparison.

Those traps are also similar in that they are ultimately about someone else. The nerve gas house was about Eric Mathews, and the 5 People trap was about Strahm.

I was a little disappointed at the end because I was expecting this to be the last one where they would tie up all the loose enRAB...but now we have to wait at least another year!

What was in the box the man gave to Jigsaw's wife? that is really bugging me!

A few questions that are getting to me a bit:

Did Perez actually die? We assume but didn't actually see a body.
The assumption is that Hoffman is still alive "down there"?
What's in Jill's box?
Is Rigg really dead? We're told he died but at the end of Saw IV he's left on the floor of the room.

We'll see in VI, probably.

But isn't it nice that some can survive? Over my journey through I to V i've noticed that i've gone from routing for the captors to routing for the protagonists, I really didn't want Strahm to catch Hoffman, in my view Strahm was the villain of V and I found my self feeling that he got his comeuppance in the end, which when thought about subjectively is so twisted seeing as he was only doing his job!

Who really sent Hoffman that "I know who you are" note?

Wasn't Jill given the box after this event?

Also the thought of Hoffman doing a Jigsaw copycat to avenge his sister just made me:rolleyes:

Didn't think it was any better or worse than the last instalment tbh.

Also agree with a few other posters that as much as we'd like it to wrap at 6, it's going to go on and on and on...possibly even to DVD-only - I shudder at the very thought!

Saw 4 is premiering on Sky next week I think, just watched the first two again on C4 and looking forward to seeing all the rest again!

I am a massive saw fan but i was very dissapointed with saw v for the following reasons:

1. Saw films are famous for it's big twists at the end which separates them from other horror films, but saw v had no twists at all. The ending was obivious from the begining, that Straum was being set up.

2. The traps in Saw films are meant to be simple and relavant to the victim. In saw V the traps are complex (eg. pendulum trap - which would require an engineering degree, months of setting it up and a group of people/machinery to set up.

3. The group of 5 people being tested had no purpose to the plot at all. The reasons for them being tested were stupid, their acting was bad and the audience didn't care what happened to them.

4. There was no structure to the plot, a lot of the audience thought this can't be the end when straum died. A lot of the flashbacks didn't add to the plot, I mean they can continue making Saw up to saw 20 if they r just going to show flashbacks of how each game/test was set up.

5. Saw 4 was only made to set up Saw 5. Saw 5 was only made to set up Saw 6, just random plots to keep the story going. I loved the 1st three saw films.

Overall I found saw V to be boring, just agent straum going around talking to himself.
