Yes this is very important. Port has to be less than 10. If i understod things right you cannot change it yourself either to a port less than 10(Force it). But if you edit this in registry it works i've read.
 
If tou do not allredy have the serielcable, it seams like it vill get more expensive to do this instead of pay a credited firm to do it...

A _million_ thanks for this piece of information! - now it worked w/o any problem - and all I had to do was to go to 'Phones & Modems' - select the appropiate Samsung CDMA Modem, Advanced tab, Advanced port settings and select 'COM 2' which was unused, and VOILA! it worked! :-D

fmobil: you have choose the [00]IMEI on the first screen.. Instead choose your country and operator.

debeli: I used the cable that came with the phone. This cable looks like any usb cable(it has a normal usb port on the computer side and the normal connector that samsung has on the phone side) but it also has a small chip in it on one side. sorinm told me in an earlier post that this makes it a serial cable(i guess it makes the phone think it's connected with a serial cable instead of usb). Anyway i just connected this cable between the computer and the phone. Without any modifications.

Then the other thing again would be the DB9(serial com port female) which is put on COM1. It has pin 2 & pin 3 connected to eachother. This port has no contact with the other cable whatsoever. After winimei is run once i had to disconnect this "dongle" (if you could call it that since it has no other function than activating COM1?) before i could run winimei again. Seems like COM1 stayed locked after winimei had run once. And had to be disconnected and reconnected between every run. Same thing with the application itself(winimei). Had to be restarted after dis/reconnecting the "dongle".

I don't know what further information i can give about the cables and hardware i used. I've posted the model of the cable if you would like to buy one(PCB429USE). But this cable shouldn't be needed for unlock according to sorinm. Good luck!

but i'm not very expert in this subject, you use 2 cables for SGH Z500 ?

you talking about the original cable USB and another cable DB9 with pin 2 & 3 short? conect one side on the COM1, and the another side!?
