Samsung Omnia Plan-Verizon

Ok, thanks!! I am beginning to lean toward the dare because I dont need a phone that is as 'business' focused as a pda or blackberry.

Then this is a good phone to get while it has many features it isn't business oriented. While I would still love to have a PDA for some things this has nearly everything I need.

Effective November 14, 2008 all PDA/Smartphone devices now require a data plan of $29.99. It doesn't matter your source of getting the device (from a friend, EBAY, Verizon Wireless: even at full retail, etc)...the data plan is required, not optional. The Omnia is considered a high end PDA.

Also, effective sometime in 2009, select wireless devices with an HTML browser will be forced to add the $15 V CAST V-Pack for data. This will also become mandatory, not optional. It also doesn't matter where the phone came from in this case. Phones that will require it will be the Voyager, Dare, Krave, and other select devices at the time. The alternative is to go up to the Premium Plan, starting at $79.99 for 450 minutes for a single line.

It isn't entirely Verizon's fault for this. The FCC has mandated this to all wireless carriers. AT&T has been forcing the data plan on all of their PDA/Smartphone devices, for years. T-Mobile has also begun. In one of my previous posts, I made a mistake by saying AT&T will start next year, but in reality...that is Sprint PCS starting all of this next year.

Mobile Email is an additional $5 per month. It is included free with the Premium Plan and the new Connect Plan. The connect plan starts at $69.99 for a single line with 450 anytime minutes and all of the standard features you normally get + Unlimited Text Messaging, Unlimited Data, and Mobile Email. The Premium Plan adds the V CAST V-Pack, VZ Navigator, and everything the Connect Plan had. The Premium Plan starts at $79.99 for 450 minutes and a single line.

You can access your email from Mobile Web for $1.99 per megabyte unless you have the $15 V CAST V-Pack, the Premium Plan, or the Connect plan...then it's free (or included, I should say).

For the Omnia, Mobile email would be included free with the mandatory data plan.

Your information is wrong. This is for all NEW devices launched after 11/14/2008. This will not effect devices launched prior( ie. dare/voayger/and other smart phones that were released prior.

Hmm...my email (which I received from Verizon Wireless before my leave) states otherwise.

The mandatory $15 is the one you should be targeting, which you did. It WILL effect these devices. It was supposed to effect these devices this time around, they just extended it. The Dare/Voyager are NOT PDA/Smartphones, therefore they are not in any way effected by the 11/14/2008 change. It is not related.

Did you mean current customers? The LG Voyager/Krave/Dare, etc...will be required to have the data plan for $15...but if the customer purchases it before the change, it won't effect them until upgrade...if that's what you meant.

I would send you my email, but it is strictly confidential until release.

You can check virtually any writing about wireless sites on the internet, like Engadget, Mobile Roar, etc...they will back my information up.

Nickrm,

Do you know why the fcc is demanding this change? This is the first I have heard about this and I think it is pretty sad that to have a PDA phone you are required to have a data plan because they require it.
