Effective November 14, 2008 all PDA/Smartphone devices now require a data plan of $29.99. It doesn't matter your source of getting the device (from a friend, EBAY, Verizon Wireless: even at full retail, etc)...the data plan is required, not optional. The Omnia is considered a high end PDA.
Also, effective sometime in 2009, select wireless devices with an HTML browser will be forced to add the $15 V CAST V-Pack for data. This will also become mandatory, not optional. It also doesn't matter where the phone came from in this case. Phones that will require it will be the Voyager, Dare, Krave, and other select devices at the time. The alternative is to go up to the Premium Plan, starting at $79.99 for 450 minutes for a single line.
It isn't entirely Verizon's fault for this. The FCC has mandated this to all wireless carriers. AT&T has been forcing the data plan on all of their PDA/Smartphone devices, for years. T-Mobile has also begun. In one of my previous posts, I made a mistake by saying AT&T will start next year, but in reality...that is Sprint PCS starting all of this next year.
