Samsung Omnia II vs HTC Droid Incredible

My new every two was up over two years ago but there was not phone out there that appealed to me so I have stuck with Motorola Razr.

I am at the point that I need ready access to the internet. The world has evolved to function assuming you have it.

So last spring I tried Samsung Omnia. Loved the phone to start though found the UI quite challenging.

The deal-breaker however was that the Omnia went to voice male in 2 1/2 rings and the volume was so low, I could not hear it if it was in my purse and my purse was more than a foot away. I missed 90% of my calls. And no real viable fix for that.

So it went back

Next I tired the HTC Eris. Loved the phone but discovered it does not do Blue-tooth voice-activation. In fact none of the Android phones do, despite the screaming of complaints on the internet, the safety issues and the fact that it is illegal in many states to use your phone in any manner than hands-free while in your car. It took 2 1/2 months for Verizon to finally acknowledge Eris was not going to get a BT voice-activation update.

So it went back

I just tried the the Moto Droid Devour -- it has Nuance software that allows for voice activated dialing -- put the rest of the phone was too big, too clunky -- I couldn't stand having a physical key board and you are pretty much forced to us if you in landscape mode.

SO it's going back.

Now the Incredible is about to come out. Another android with no BT voice-activation -- but it is Android 2.1 and there is a DVXmobile program that you can purchase for under $5 to get the phone to function pretty close to voice activation.

On the other hand, there is Samsung Omnia II. It sounds extremely good though battery life seem a recurrent problem Don't like a phone that goes dead within a day. But it does have Blue Tooth Voice activation dialer.

Blue tooth voice activated dialer is a deal breaker for me. The software for the Incredible to enable it to do so -- sounds like a good fix -- but....

Anyone have any compare and contrast comments re: HTC Droid Incredible and Samsung Omnia II?

The Incredible is much more powerful than the Omnia II and has a capacitive screen rather than a resistive one - based on specs, the Incredible wins in almost every category, if not all. Most of today's smartphones will not last a day if you heavily use all of their capabilities like media, web, camera w/ flash et al. If you want battery life, get a BlackBerry. I've never used BT voice before but if you can get it on the Incredible, it's a more modern phone than the Omnia which has been on the market for about six months. Of course, there is nothing more definitive than testing each one out in person to see the form factor, weight, ease of use and operation speed. Personally I would probably pick up an Incredible if it was time to upgrade, since Android is growing more popular while Windows Mobile is on the decline.

I have grown tired of the WM platform and will be upgrading my Omnia for the Incredible. I tried another droid (Moto) and was sold on the platform, capacitive screen and speed. Skip the Samsung and move to the Incredible. IMHO

If you use Voice Dial alot, driving, or in a state that requires hands free, the Incredible will disappoint you. No android phone currently can do Blue Tooth Voice dial. I was hung between the Omnia II and Incredible and went for the incredible. I am thinking of returning it ($35 restock fee) just because I often drive in CT which is a hands free state.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but hands-free states only ban holding the phone to your head, not dialing. At least that's the way it was explained to me by an officer in Maryland (our law goes into effect this upcoming October).

You may be right, however each state may be different. I just know that this is a feature that every phone I'm owned in the last 6 years has had. I am not sure how they can say it is hands free when you have to hit an on screen button to start it, and then scroll to the correct entry if more than one number exists. I love everything else about the Incredible, it is the best phone I have had, just having trouble with that one safety issue.

DVXMobile has an app for $4 that almost solves the BT voice dialing problem. But you still have to press the screen to get it to start and to hangup calls.

It is just downright dangerous.

As an attorney -- I would not encourage anyone to try and fine-slice the law re: talking on the phone vs dialing. The point of the demand for hands-free is to avoid your taking your eyes off the road while driving. Having to look to push the buttons is just as dangerous.

I sooo love the Incredible that I am trying to figure out how to put the widget for the DVXmobile in a place that I do not have to look when I press it....

But I confess -- on my first day of using it, I almost had an accident -- though I was driving on the street at 25 mph.

I am just hoping that someone realizes there is a lot of money to be made designing an app that will run the BT. Nuance was licensed by Verizon for the Droid Devour which is supposed to enable BT voice dialing. But I can't seem to get them to license it to me for the Incredible.

I dial via blue tooth vioce over my droid every single day. I've also connected an incredible to the car with no problems at all.

If your car has blue tooth capabilities and your phone is connected, you can dial your phone via voice over the car's bluetooth controls.

I'm not sure what you are talking about....

Verizon licensed for the Devour from Nuance a special app to BT Voice activation. As far as I know, the Droid does not have this. So it is your car not the phone that is providing the BT capabilities.

Mine -- a porsche 944 -- does nto have those capabilities...
