Samsung charges to repair phones still under warranty?

I purchased an inexpensive Samsung a167 go phone for my mother who only uses it a few times a month. She's probably made less than a few dozen calls on it and keeps it in her purse. It appears like new and has never been exposed to the elements or dropped. One day it began to vibrate while in her purse and wouldn't stop until the battery was removed.

After that it had charging problems & would drain the battery quickly.

Since, the phone was only a few months old and had a one year warranty I contacted Samsung to see if they could repair it or replace it with a refurbished phone. They told me to send it in to their repair center in Texas.

I expected them to send me a refurbished model after receiving & checking the phone, as that's what AT&T always did in the past while replacing broken phones under warranty.

I never heard from Samsung after a few weeks, so I contacted them and was asked to pay a $70 repair fee to fix their phone that was still under a one year warranty.

Eventually it became apparent that Samsung is unwilling to fix their phones under warranty without charging you for the repair even though it was due to a phone that was clearly defective.

Having only paid $50 retail for the phone I wasn't going to pay more for it to repair than the cost of a new replacement, besides I knew that the retailer was going to have to stand behind it if Samsung would not.

Samsung clearly misleads the public by claiming a one year warranty on defective phones, but then puts the burden on the consumer by paying for repairs.

Of course I demanded a replacement from the retailer (Walmart) and they generously complied. I expect that Walmart will quit selling these products when it sees how many problems they have with them.

Samsung is clearly not the company it use to be, and I will no longer recommend their products to any of my family members or professional clients.
