Safety tips shooting outdoors (my first firearm)?

I bought my first gun, a springfield XD .40

When I get it next week, I'm going to go shooting in a field. There's suppose to be a lot of turkey hunters there. They'll be wearing orange vests, so I'll look out for them. I will also shoot into a hillside to prevent stray bullets.

But what are some other safety tips? I'm going to be shooting tin cans.

Is ricochet a concern?

when you are shooting any firearm you should always keep your finger above the trigger then aim and then pull the trigger this will help prevent shooting any thing else around the target make sure what your shooting at isnt hard like any type of metal because if you shoot at a certain angle the bullet can ricochet. have fun! XD

If there are other people meandering about in the same field as you, you shouldn't be shooting there. Just watching for orange vests isn't enough. Everybody that might possibly walk near your firing line needs to be aware of what it is and not walk on it.

You need to be 100% sure of your backstop. Also, scaring away the turkeys by target shooting is kind of mean.

Always wear eye and ear protection, always follow the 4 rules of firearm safety, and make sure that everybody else does too.

Ricochets can be a pain in the butt, which is a big reason for the eye protection.
