Saddlebag snap repair

Anyone ever done this? I bought a saddlebag snap repair kit from the dealer to repair the snap on my c90t saddlebag. Goofy thing is that it comes with the snaps and the rivets, and a rod and base. You stick the rivet through the hole, put the snap part on it, then position the rod in the rivet and pound it with a hammer to mushroom the rivet.

Only trouble is, the bag is lined with hard plastic riveted to the outside, so you can't get to the back on the snap to put the base on it. I was able to get the old one out by stretching the leather a little bit, got the new one position but there's nothing solid to allow for it to be hammered, You can't put the piece of base metal on it because of the plastic.

My next thought is to put the rid in a cordless drill and maybe try mushrooming the rivet that way.

Anyone ever done this before? Any other suggestions?

I can not help you with the replacing of the snap, but pass on advise given me. Use a little vaseline on your remaining snaps, this will reduce the likely hood of more being pulled apart.

Correct Blakie.. I used to be into boating and any snaps should have the base cleaned out annually and put a little vasoline in the cavity to stop corrosion. This would be in the spring area.

Dave,
uh... yeah.. a couple of vise grips should look really trick... LOL.
took it to a local auto upholsterer... he said the W&M zipper was a cheap plastic 'spiral' type. He was 'surprised' to see it in this application...:(. So anyway he is going to replace with a quality metal zipper for $50.
SIGH.... money is starting to get tight when one is unemployed... lol

I take it that you have the mushroom part on the inslde of the bag. Place the plastic or metal female shape over it. Next place the snap part over the rivit.
Then the part that spreads the rivit. Now you will prpbably need a 3rd hand for this so get the wife to hold things in line and then use a c clamp to tighten it. It WILL take a few trys to line up the A) female plastic pan, B) the rivit and snap, C) the pin that you are suppose to hammer if it were on the bench. Oh hell just bring it over and i'll show ya!!!;)

The snaps brke on my C50T saddlebags, I drilled the center of them out inserted a small bolt through the hole put a washer and nut on the inside.

That also would work and I would not have to travel out that far, not that I don't like a good road trip...try looking at a 8-32 or a 6-32. Something in that size. I suggest stainless of brass if you can get them and use locktight.
