Saddest film you have seen?

OMG so true! Me and my gf were left depressed after watching on filmfour one night when we couldn't sleep.

the bit at the end where he puts her ashes in the tin, always gets me

Watership Down, ET, Bambi and The Lion King all get me blubbering.

I've only ever watched the first 3 once because I find them so sad.

Re your spoiler - agreed!

Grave of the Fireflies is incredibly sad and somewhat depressing - it hits you so hard that you can't watch it too often, but it's still very well worth a watch.

^^^^ Stunning film.

I would add:

How Green Was My Valley - second time I saw it I cried even more as I knew what was coming :o
With Roddy McDowall in his child-actor phase long before the Apes films.

Shenandoah - American Civil War film starring Jimmy Stewart. The dining table with empty chairs gets me every time.

The Day They Gave Babies Away** (NO this is not the same as Who Will.... mentioned above - but obviously similar story! ). Starring Glynis Johns and Cameron Mitchell
Added: Apologies Blah hadn't read your post....

And ET - sorry! Even though I resent my emotions being manipulated in such an obvious manner !

PS: Brian's Song with James Caan.

** I seem to remember a documentary - possibly Horizon - using this film when testing emotional tears vs the eye-cleaning variety as it was guaranteed to get the correct type of tears flowing. You have been warned !

I agree, such a sad film with Ann Margaret as the mother. Another movie, set in the same sort of era is After the promise, starring Mark Harmon. His wife also dies, and all his boys get taken away, and put into institutions, he then promises his dead wife he'll get them all back. The final scene where he eventually is reunited with his eldest son Richard, is so emotional and gets me everytime.
Marley and me is also very sad, our 2 jacks are 15 and nearly 13 now, and as a great animal lover, it really choked me up. Also Alpha Dogs, the movie debut of Justin Timberlake, is absolutely heart breaking, and is one film i could never bear to watch again.
One flew over the cuckoo's nest, starring Jack Nicholson is also incredibly sad.
As is, Boys dont cry, starring Hilary Swank.

Beaches is the one that springs to mind, first time I saw it I was in a right state.

The Little Princess also never fails to make me cry, such a good film that's been unfairly labeled as a childrens film when really it's for any age.

hmmmm films that made me cry lol

Beaches
Stepmom
Everybody's Fine (simply amazing and cried for 20 mins)
Prayer's for Bobby
Ladder 49 (cried for over an hour)
Marley and Me

LoaRAB of films made me cry but the saddest i've seen would probably be Prayer's for Bobby since i could relate to that film in many ways

I cry at so many films - Tom Hanks has given me many a tearjerker....Big, Forest Gump, Green Mile, Philadelphia, A League of Their Own but how have we got so far into this thread without anyone mentioning Atonement?
My goodness the twist at the end of that left me in a flood of tears for at least an hour!!! :o
Awesome film though. :)
