S83

Hi all,
I'm new to this forum, so please, be kind. I was out looking at new bikes today. Want to trade-in a ZRX-1200 and do the curiser thing. I'm a little old to be humping that gas tank. Anyway, got to looking at the M/C 50s, and the S83/50, and liked what I saw. I found this forum and would like some input from you guys in the know. I'd like a bike that can be used for commuting, driving around town and also a two-up long ride (not that often). The M/C/S 50s look good and it looks like everyone has them, but I don't see anything on the S83. I like the hit my 1200 gives and I'm thinking that the 83 could do it all but is it too much bike. My stats are 5'6", 155lbs and the two up rider would be 5'2", 100lbs. Can you guys, and gals give me some pros and cons on this matter? :D

I agree with Texrider. The C/M 50 will be your best bet. From what I've read on this forum and seen around my way, the C50 is better for more 2 up riding whereas the M50 suits the solo rider to a Tee and at the same time, will accomodate 2 up riding.

I had a VZ1400, The same thing as an S83. The bike had lots of power. It was comfy for me, but cramped. I am 6' and 245.

I have an s83. My wife has a s50. Both are 2005's. I like my wife's s50, but it is not powerful enough. It seems to have a lower top end also - I go 65 on it and feel like I'm winding it out. I LOVE my s83. Plenty of power for a cruiser. I'm about to ride it out to Utah - can't wait!

I love my S83. I would get bored with anything of less power. Occasional two up riding, no problem. Commuting, no problem. Round town riding, no problem. Interstate blasting, no problem. Distance riding, no problem. I even find it fun for blasting twisties also. It isn't a sport bike, but for a cruiser does a good job. I like the other bikes you mentioned also but wouldn't trade my S83 for any of them......

I would take my passenger down to the dealer and get on the bike to check for comfort and roominess for the 2 up riding. If that feels good, the S83 would be a cool choice - it has no competitor except H-D and I'm thinking you might find an S83 for less than an $16K+ H-D Wide Glide.

Welcome!

I made the move from sportbikes to cruisers many years ago, and I've owned three of the four bikes on your list and have spent some time on the fourth.

I find the M50 and C50 to be, well, boring. Heavy, underpowered, not very nimble, not much lean angle. Hated the Volusia (same as the C50 but without the fuel injection) I had, sold it after a month. Test drove the M50, hated it also.

I love the S50 (VS800), which is exceptionally nimble and offers world-class acceleration 0-60. It is a blast to ride in the twisties, and I'm still impressed with the design after owning at least one of them constantly for the last 11 years. The first one went 135,000 miles and rode to all 48 lower states, so you can't beat them for reliability either. The second one raked up 37,000 miles in less than a year, with no mechanical problems at all. I still have it to play in the mountains, even tough I stepped up to a Harley for everyday riding.

The S83 is a great bike also. It is almost as nimble as the S50, and while not as fast 0-60 it is faster above 60 and better on the highway. It is also better for two-up riding. I have one in the driveway with over 40,000 miles on it, and it still looks and drives like a brand new bike. My girlfriend rides it every day, and while she can't quite keep up with my VS800 in the mountains I often steal hers for longer trips.

To me, the S50 is a Datson 240 ZX (light, agile, quick), the S83 is a 69 Camaro (fast, sporty), and the C50/ M50 are a Cadilac Coupe DeVille (comfortable and smooth ride but not much performance).

Johnny....

Based on what you are trading out of, you'd probably enjoy the S83. I haven't ridden one, but based on the stats, and opinions I've read over the years, it's a hell of a bike. It's on my list of bikes that if I just happen to drive by one being sold for a hell of a deal, I wouldn't pass it up.

If price is not a consideration....Maybe you might want to check out the M109R, or the Yammie Roadliner. Big stats for horse and torque on both bikes.

Sssshhhhhhh! Don't let it hear you say "cruiser". It thinks its a sport bike ;)

I used to get a lot of free beers up at bike nights pulling wheelies on my 800. You'd be amazed the number of folks who will bet you that a cruiser can't stand up and walk across the parking lot.

With the addition of some MC Enterprizes highway pegs, some ISO grips, a No Pork throttle lock, and a sissy bar bag, the S50/ 800 makes a pretty good bike to travel on. What it lacks in ride quality compared to a larger bike, it makes up for by being light and easy to handle, and with the 'fun factor'. It fits through a motel room door also, so I never had to worry about anyone stealing it. I absolutely LOVE my Harley FLH, but I still love that 800 also.

Here is a diffrent angle to look at
One that I wish was out there for me BEFORE I bought the C50SE

My YZF is going to get me in trouble and my neck and wrists kills me when I ride it. And I cant ride it slow. It just screems and I love the sound of a screeming inline 4.... Prob is the cops dont

so

I was looking for a Crusier -
That means
Big torque at low RPM`s (To me anyway)
Low RPM`s at highway speeds
Bags
Sheild
ect , ect

Everyone said how much power the C50 has
Suzuki said relaxed revs on the highway and lots of low end grunt

So whats my point

My C50 is way to high in the RPM range on the Highway (For what I think a V-twin is all about).
And there is much to much wt for that 800 twin to push around. (2up)

I think a V-twin should be a long stroke - not over square short stroke.

Dont get me wrong here - I like my C50
I would be happier if it didnt have offset crank pins, loafed along at a MUCH lower RPM, even at the expence of horse power.

Relax - enjoy the sound, enjoy the ride. Isnt this what crusiers are all about?

It just seems that everyone wants more and more power. And the easiest way to get that is to shorten the stoke, raise the PRM`s, add more valve overlap ect,ect

I keep reading people say - I want that Harley sound - Well it doesnt come from a 45 deg V-Twin with 45 deg offset crank pins - and It doesnt come from a SHORT STROKE high reving motor...

So for me - Hmmmm
I like my C50 2up much better than my Sport bike....
I can ride it longer than my Sport bike...
It will go like stink - if you bring the revs up.
Looks cool - I get many comments about its looks
Like that its water cooled
Doesnt sound like a Harley  Sounds like a big single to me
Revs to high on the highway
Needs MORE low end grunt
It doesnt need more power, it just needs more power DOWN LOW

Would I buy another - NO
I would do more home work on the RPM issue and low end grunt

Problem is money
This bike falls into the best buy group. And I read an article on the new Vulcan 900 - The tester said it needed another gear for highway use.... Go figure.. And after I read this artical the Suzuki C50 still falls into the best buy group. I dont think Kawi got it quite right as it seems all they did was copy the C50, make the motor a little bigger and add a gas gauge..

I just dont get the power crusier - Buy a Sport bike....
Dont like the prison issue head down a** up position - well there is the Bandit or others that have a nice riding position !!

So Suzuki hope you are out there LURKING
Build a crusier like the C50T or SE Size wise
with
45 Deg V Twin - No offset pins
Water Cooled
No cross over in the pipes
Better Seats
LONG STROKE small bore
Max HP and Torque at 3000 - 3500 rpm
3000 RPM at 70 mph
Better shocks front and back
Better Brakes
No Tubs and No Spokes Pls
And no BS about price - most off the stuff like brake parts are off the shelf

What do you think ??????
$50,000.00
