S83 value?

I have a red, S83 Suzuki blvd with 1900 miles on it (2006 model). I was in a dealershipos Saturday, and fell in love with the 109 model. However, the salesman rudely says he would by no means take my bike in on trade because no one buys them. He says "look around: we do not even stock them. Now, I must say, this red S83 is a beauty and fast at 1400 CC. I have had compliments on this bike. He says trade in value is 4800 bucks! It a %$# &^%$ 8500 motorcycle! Comments?

According to the Kelly Blue Book, the bike is worth $4605 as a trade in. The NADA pricing guide (which is based on what dealers report actually giving people for trade in over the previous 90 days) says the trade in value of a 2006 S83 is $4800. Depreciation on a new vehicle is brutal.

However, when the dealer resells it, it will go for between $6400 and $7400 miles depending on mileage. If you sell it as a private sale, you could expect to get about $6000-6500 for it, far more than trade in but less than retail from a dealer. That's why you are usually better off selling your bike rather than trading it in.

As for the low sales, he is correct. I have a close friend who owns a Suzuki dealership, and know a couple other Suzuki dealers. The close friend told me he sold about 350 C50/ C50T models last year, and only about 6 S83s. The others have told me that they don't keep a S83 on the showroom, but if you want one they will trade for another dealer to get you one. The sales of the S50 are only slightly better.

The sales problem is that both designs date to 1986 (the name changed in 2004 but they are the same bikes as the Intruder 1400 and 800), so Suzuki does not push them at all, spending their ad dollars on the new models instead. Also, while I love the sporty, narrow look of the S83/ S50, the fat custom look of the C50 is much more in style. But these bike are excellent all around performers, have a tremendous reputation for being bullet proof, and have a style that some folks just love. They have a tremendous cult following, so if you want to get rid of yours a private buyer would probably snatch it up.

Both the S83 and S50 will be replaced soon, rumor has it in 2008 or 2009 by a single model of about 1100ccs.

I was happy with the one I had for what it was. Just can't get into the "cruiser" thing. Gave it a try, just not for me. Mine sold like a hot cake! Mine was a 2005 with a little over 10,000 miles on it. Dealer offered me $4800.00 trade towards my VStrom. I sold it the same day to an individual for $6500.00. Originally bought it new for $7300.00 OTD.

I bought my 2005 at a dealer in early July for $5400. He got it in trade on a Thursday, put it on the showroom floor on Friday, and I bought it Saturday, so he only had it a couple of days. It had 9000 miles on it and 1 month left on the standard warranty. Everything on it looked like new except some yellowing on the pipes. It is dated style-wise. One reason I bought it was I don't like the look of the fat tanks on most of todays cruisers.

The dealer has an 2005 in stock now, with less than 6000 miles, and he's asking $5999. It has been there awhile.

I have stopped by this dealer about once a week since late spring, and have never seen a new S83 on his showroom floor.

Congrats on the new ride. If you do a Google search for a product called "blue job" it does a great job removing the discoloration on the ppes.

Thanks DrBob - I've seen Blue Job on a few websites, along with many other similar products. Now that it's getting cold and wet here in Indiana, I'll take the time to try it.

Ive had real good results with Blue Job and a lot of elbow grease. I spend yesterday afternoon restoring the pipes on a custom I bought, as they were almost black right where they met the cylinders. They look brand new now.

But I have also had real bad results from similar products, so I make sure I stick to the Blue Job brand.
