Is there any such thing as a freeware app for instant messaging on S60v3? All the ones I know of (Agile, IM+ etc) are commercial.

Yeah I would definitely try fring
They just added support for MSN and they have google talk and skype. It's a pretty decent app.

It's sad because I've used many IMs on my s60 v3's and the free one I put on my pearl smokes them all. I literally click once and I'm messaging w/ my wife....and within seconds.

frankly, the one only one i found that was worth using was Agile.
Ever since they've become subscription based ive stopped using IM on my phone.
Except obviously just to check out the new apps.

Thanks.. I am looking into Fring and Eqo, but they both want to send themselves to me over SMS and I am terrified of receiving some sort of exhorbitant charge from my carrier for data usage or premium sms receipt. I was hoping to just download a .sis file from the net and install manually. Am I at any risk from using the sms method? I have zero data plan. (I will use wifi for the actual apps)

I also found this one, MMIM Windows Live Messenger:
http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1026443&page=1&pp=15

It's decent if very plain and basic, runs fine on my E61, but the only problem is that the chat window doesn't seem to auto-scroll down when new messages come in, so I have to scroll manually every time which is annoying.

Hmm.. I'll see if that happens then. Anyone know about my question from above, regarding delivery by sms? Is it just a link they send you or a premium sms with the whole file?

I also tried Hier (free) but couldn't get it to go past the sign-on process at all. Also it's GPRS only, no wifi.

I'm eager to try Fring and Eqo but need some re-assurance first. I don't want a $600 bill* for data download of those apps through the sms gateway.

(*That is, a bill/invoice charging me that amount. I'd be perfectly happy to have a "six-hundred-dollar-bill" on the other hand, if such a thing were ever printed by the Treasury.)

Blackberry has IM nailed in a way that NO other device does. The Blackberry Gtalk and Yahoo apps are _killer_ and free, and the one thing I truly miss from my Pearl and 7105t.

Update, I have now tried both Fring and Eqo:

Fring works, kind of. It doesn't seem to be able to open a new MSN Messenger chat session with anyone on my contact list. If I try sending a message, I just always get an error saying "Your MSN message was not sent." If the other person initiates the chat first from their end, then everything works fine and I can reply. But that's less than ideal.

EQO I managed to download and install fine, but it will not launch or actually run on my E61. It just starts and then freezes on a blank screen every time.

Any other suggestions?

EDIT: Eqo does in fact work, but has a very user-hostile interface for instant messaging, possibly as a result of being intended primarily as a VOIP application.

On the chat/message window when talking to an MSN contact, you cannot type a new message. You actually have to go to a separate "compose message" screen to type, and then send, at which point you're returned to the main chat window. Any messages that come in while you're typing are not visible, until you finish and return to the main chat window.

Fring still cannot initiate a new chat session with an MSN contact; it must be instigated by the other side.

A shiny new penny goes to the first person who can recommend a free IM app that works well with MSN...

Thanks for the ones mentioned so far... they come close and I will settle for them if necessary, just hoping there's something a teensy bit better. But then I know it's freeware and beggars can't be choosers.
