S60v3 Feature Pack 2 announced

First of all.....I'm the last one to criticize ipod fans on their excitement of the pending iphone release and I'm also highly critical of nokia at times. My main concern is your down right RUDE behavior towards fellow members who disagree with you. Your feelings about Nokia are well known and are certainly welcome but your manners are nearly as poor as your grammar!
....I could care less whether you bash Nokia into the ground! ...just quit the personal attacks on every member that debates with you.

Damn you Nokia ..why the hell do they want to make "better use" of the RAM. Just load the mofo up with enough that it doesnt matter. I had a BB Pearl forced upon me at work and while the little guy is lacking in processing speed it's ability to keep every app open and run flawlessly while doing so is quite impressive. Designing another feature pack is great but bumping up the onboard RAM would make most of their devout followers even happier.

No I come to the forums and talk about the phones: good, bad or indifferent. You dont seem to complain when I provide positiv remards, advice to others or information - but only you turn up to whine when I make a critical remark on Nokia.

If you cant handle objectivity, you have no business on a public discussion forum. As I said, I bought a phone, not the magic kool-aid you might have swallowed by the gallon while copulating with yours.

Also the term "blissful ignorance", I certailnly didnt use here in this thread, but if I did in the past if would most likely have referred to you specifically. Not sure what that has to do with anything in this thread.

Many bloggers including Symbian guru agreed that this is a bogus line of reasoning. When S40 and inferior non-smartphoens have things as simple as time profiles, there is no reason they should not have been in S60 3rd and should not go into firmware updates.

As I said, nobody is asking for GPS implants, just live up to the positioning of the N and E series. They are not cheap and they are supposed to be upgradeable via firmware - that is the whole point of smartphones.

I don't know if there is anything preventing the programmers from introducing a f/w update that adds time profiles, and I agree that they need to implement that.

What they CAN'T add is hardware acceleration or more RAM, and I think it is foolish to expect the programmers to intentionally cripple future OS systems to guarantee that they can be run on outdated hardware.

If they design the OS and some new apps to run on devices with a hardware accelerator, like a graphics card for example, clearly that wouldn't work too well on a non-accelerated phone.

Running more powerful graphic applications, and doing it more quickly would be "living up" to the N and E series I think, yes? This is called progress, and it is inevitable. They design the OS and programs to run on faster, more current and more capable machines, not on 'outdated' (it's a relative term) hardware.

If you think there is anything "bogus" about that line of reason, I suggest you consider the evolution of every other device you own. Even a PC is only upgradable to a point. Eventually, a weak point will drag down the entire system, unless you're willing to replace everything. If you can't deal with something becoming outdated, I suggest you invest in something a bit more static, such as books.

Books are irrelevant here. While Obsolescence is an inevitability, cynical planned obsolescence is pretty much abuse of customers and the environment.

Timed profiles were in S60 before and are in S40 now. There is no excuse for this omission. Even a cheap SE phone has this. I was surprised to find it absent in S60 3rd. More surprised to find that this retrograde step will not be fixed, but rather consumers pockets raked for more money instead.

A2DP is running on the W950, M600i and P990i. It is one at least one existing Nokia phone that I know off. You could make positioning excuses about why it isnt on E series, but why it aint on the N series phones, now, with their "multimedia computer" positioning, well there really isnt an excuse.

New features, hey we all like them. Progress can only be good. But Nokia is playing games on a lot of this stuff. There is no getting around that fact.

This is the only thing that really excites me....a genuine full screen caller ID option. I pray that they somehow make this a reality on the N95 through FW updates. *down on my knees* It would be so nice to look at a huge display and see someones grill without squinting to see whos calling. While driving I keep my phone on a windshield holder and it's a good enough distance away to be slightly distracted.

Yes it's bad for the environment, and yes, I would love for my N73 to be able to upgrade to FP2 when it comes out. I'm pretty sure though that almost every company that releases a product that has any hope of being successful has some planned obsolenscence. From car manufacturers to clothing. If people stopped buying their products because they release one products that will forever be current...well, they'd probably go out of business. Don't think they don't take this into consideration when designing a product.

There are plenty of reasons for them having not released phones that take advantage of things like hardware acceleration or A2DP, the most obvious reasons being cost, lack on support in applications and peripherals, and lack of interest by consumers. Most people wouldn't pay extra for a phone that could do something but is incapable of because no one takes advantage of it. This is starting to change, specifically because of new

I'm sure that, just as the artlces mention, the FP2 will offer other benefits aside from the timed profiles. I'd like them to incorporate this into future f/w updates, but even if they don't, I doubt the timed profiles was a major reason for the FP2 update. If having timed profiles is the only selling point for FP2 enabled phones, I think Nokia will have a hard time winning over current S60 users. I'm sure they realize this as well.

It comes down to demand. Remember that most people on here are on the leading edge of adopting new mobile technology, but the same doesn't hold true for most of the world market. Most consumers, at least ones that I've dealt with, are more interested in the camera abilities and wired MP3 playing capabilities (and its use as a phone of course). Nokia has been meeting these needs. There is still a limited demand for A2DP, and now that it is increasing and becoming more common, Nokia is addressing that.

Hey, you should see how things are in the US. We only get tossed crumbs compared to the European and Asian markets. You're getting new hardware rolled out much faster than the US.

I'm not trying to defend Nokia or their business practices, I just don't see a huge fault with what they're doing. Ideally, of course I'd like to have access to the newest Symbian OS and all the goodies that come with it, but I also understand that it's easier for them as a company to roll out an upgrade like this with all new hardware, rather than trying to balance between making things backwards compatible and still innovative and new.

Keep in mind also that FP1 and the standard S60 3rd won't have to be discontinued just because the FP2 release. Nor will firmware updates stop. It may simply be that FP2 is designed give high end phones added capabilities that will just be a selling point to justify their price.
