Open C will be welcome news to app developers. And they're finally addressing the multi-tasking issues. No mention of an updated version of Flash that supports video....

Blogged above, as well.

If you read his comments on the S60 blog, it will not be an upgrade to FP1, you'll have to get an FP2 device. However, he also states that things should be demo'd on a real device at 3GSM, which starts monday!!

No, it will be the same old crap as FP1: ie Nokia refusing to add a feature to phones that are perfectly capable of it, so that they can sell more devices while on the other hand still falsely claiming that they are environmentally friendly, bla bla bla.

I don't think imcompatibility is the issue. Think about it like this: There's how many S60v3 devices out, toss in a few S60v3 FP1 devices, you've got quite a collection. They'd have to write a new firmware for each of those. Yes they currently (and will continue) to update them, but that's bug fixes, not re-writing an entirely new firmware.

Plus, they're a business, in the business of making money. Of course they're going to produce more capable devices with upgrades. They continue to support their older models but there's no business reason for them to offer an upgrade in the form of software that they don't make any money off.

um .. is the n95 the only device confirmed to have FP1? Are there any released devices with FP1? Did nokia basically announce another firmware Upgrade without getting the previous out the door, and what does this do to support for the previous devices? This doesn't even touch software development for the other devices.

The N95, N76, 6290, and I think there's two other ones that are announced with FP1. There are currently not any devices released with FP1.

No FP2 devices are expected on the market till 2nd half of the year.

I'm actually working on an editorial about this and another thing I noticed in the FP2 announcement. Very interesting, these announcements. It'll be posted probably tomorrow, though, I have some big clients at my real job that will most likely suck up my entire day. Love it.

Hopefully the use of Open C will allow developpers to create zippy applications... the same with Nokia and their core offerings (e.g. messages, browser etc)

A business has social and environmental responsibilities - which they are all too happy to mention when it suits them or portrays them in a light they would like to see marketed.

BTW I have had two Cowon MP3 players and BOTH have had firmware upgrades that surpassed what was promised when I bought the items. No prizes for guessing why I bough the second one, or for guessing what my next MP3 player will be. Obviously it aint gonna be an Ipod. Building customer loyalty is smart business, not charity.

Nobody is asking to have a GPS chip retrofitted in their phone - but even with the most scrooge-minded thinking, it would still be better than nothing for Nokia to say charge a token fee to say add A2DP to these existing S60 3rd devices for instance. But frankly that is still a ripoff considering we put up with all the things they claim are done in the original firmware specifciation and dont work in the first place!

And you overblow what it takes to change the firmware. It is not as major as you claim - that is why they have this Symbian and S60 platform in the first place.

The people thinking like you ("Screw the customers its business isnt it?") will be the same ones whining when Nokia customers run over en masse and start buying Ipods or any other flavor of next month and the month after that.

And I would say hey, Nokia deserves the pain of losing those customers - and the associated marketing cost to replace those customers - they dont do enough of the right things to build loyalty in the first place!

Skagen, you seem content on bashing Nokia in every thread i see you in. Perhaps it's time to retire that E50 of yours and head off into the sunset. Anyone that portrays a positive attitude towards Nokia quickly becomes your mortal enemy. Do us a favor and relax a bit........

You might be the one who needs to relax, since when I praise Nokia I havent seen you turn up to make a note of it. So not sure why you turn up when I critisize.

Besides, I bought a phone, not a ticket to a fanboy club or any magic kool-aid. You are the same one who would critisize the Ipod-cult fans when they do exactly what you are doing: "See no evil".

I will call it as I see it. What Nokia need to be praised for they will get praise from me. What the dont do positive, I will call it the same.

On this specifc issue, the treatment of FP1 is shameful by Nokia. Sony is running phones on the same basic framework Symbian91 and they had A2DP a long time ago. Its a joke to claim we need new hardware for something as simple as that.

Seems with all the fanboys in this forum, the only real customer Nokia will be losing is you, Skagen. But even so, it seems you're still sticking around to buy Nokia's new devices despite all of your complaints.

Businesses also have the responsibility to stay in business. It may suck that we can't upgrade to FP1 or FP2 from our current handsets, but what are we to do about it? SE may have had A2DP long before Nokia or any of their s60 devices to date, but what else has SE done? How many wifi handsets have you seen from SE's side? What has SE done to stack up to and over s60? You can argue with me about the cameras and the A2DP and how the UI has been improved to support forms of multitasking and whatever else. But if that be the case, then why are you still here? Why are you going to come to these specific forums, give everyone a hard time, and bash Nokia? Buy yourself the phone you find to be superior and leave us be. We don't need you to save us from our "blissful ignorance" as you might put it.

Back on topic.

I didn't see this mentioned anywhere on any of the blogs, but I noticed it from the screenshots. I remember thinking to myself, "Wouldn't it just be SOOO handy if my N73 displayed a digital clock at the top of the screen regardless of what application I'm working in?" Correct me if I'm wrong, but one of those screenshots seems to show this version of s60 doing just that. I still don't think it's out of the reach of developers to get a small applet programmed for current s60 devices to do this, but worse-case scenario, it'll be included with future models. Always something to look forward to.

they're most likely being realistic about their hardware limitations. especially considering the FP2 is supposed to support things like hardware acceleration.

my biggest gripe with nokia's symbian os is the lack of RAM. i personally would NOT want an updated OS that would potentially use even more RAM. as it is, it's difficult to keep more than a few programs running simultaneously, and with the addition of things like RSS on the active idle, full screen photo id, programs requiring hardware acceleration, etc, that usage would probably only increase.

hopefully they'll start matching hardware (which as of now, is NOT upgradable) to the f/w and software that is capabale of being run.

Charlie, if you go subscribe to the Voice of S60 podcast (http://blogs.s60.com/voiceofs60) they interview the head of marketing for s60 and when asked about RAM usage, he states that FP2 is supposed to make better use of RAM because of some demand paging or something, I'm not familiar with the technology but basically he said it'll use RAM more efficiently than in the past.

good! demand paging is just a kind of virtual memory use, and will definitely help the available RAM go farther without increasing hardware cost, but it won't be a total replacement. i wonder if this is something they could implement in the S60v3 and FP1...

and at least this shows an awareness on their part. i noticed my updated ME f/w seems a bit more perky than the previous release after serveral days of use, which i'm guessing is due to more careful use of RAM
