S60 3rd for CDMA?

I don't see it in the near future, at least from Nokia. Here's why:

1. Earlier this year Nokia attempted to partner with Sanyo. Would have been a FANTASTIC partnership, as Sanyo makes some of the best CDMA phones out there, but has a zero presence in GSM, and vice versa for Nokia. Things got rocky though when they started talking about what patents and stuff to share, so they broke up and Nokia announced that they were pulling out of the CDMA market entirely.

2. Qualcomm, Nokia's archrival in back-end cellphone technologies, holds the patents for just about every cell technology out there, specifically for CDMA. They have both sued each other repeatedly, and Nokia doesn't want to have to pay licensing fees to Qualcomm.

3. The two major CDMA players in the US are notorious for closed-systems, which Nokia's not a fan of. Specifically Verizon, S60 Nokias, with their full-open bluetooth, full web browser, heavy use of java, etc, are just not suited to Verizon's tastes. Sprint isn't near as bad, but they still have some differences.

Nokia just has never been big into the CDMA market and without it, still holds 34% of the WORLD cellphone market, with the next runner up, Motorola, being a mere 17%, half of Nokia. Thus, they don't care, and they don't need to care. Nokia launches roughly 40-50 models/year.

Thanks, great post. i will rephrase it as "i got stock with lousy T-mobile as i fell in love with Symbian". But i so need Verizon's coverage

The ONLY reason I'll give that one to you is because you have Symella working on your Cingular network.

Though, if I wasn't cheap, I could spend the extra $14/month for the unlimited data and it would work, still giving me more for less, but that's another topic.

(I'm just mad about losing AT&T to Cingular. . . )

Coverage was mentioned, Jonny, that's it. Not price/minutes/data. For COVERAGE, no one tops Verizon or Cingular.

EDIT** - before the post whoring, flaming, and trolls step in, let me specify that when I say COVERAGE, I'm talking about the nation as a whole. Not specific pockets. There ARE places where one carrier, be it Sprint, T-mobile, or Bubba's Wireless is the ONLY game in town. Duh. When you pull out a map of the US and start mapping out coverages, though, Verizon and Cingular dominate.

Can you imagine a say N75 with the Verizon UI but with the ability to open Word, Excel, PDF, etc files? I Just Threw Up A Little Bit In My Mouth.

Verizon's business practices and Nokia's open mindedness don't mix very well.

I'd be tempted to buy a CDMA E61/E62 equivalent that supported EV-DO and R-UIMs, and I generally think poorly of the CDMA carriers. There are some places where they're the only ones with decent coverage. Not where I live, but I travel to some places where 1x and EV-DO coverage are better, and wouldn't mind keeping a low minute+unlimited data plan on Verizon or SPCS around for those times.

That said, it's going to be a while before Nokia enters the CDMA market again, if ever. Sad, because I really liked the 6185.

Since no US carrier is willing to implement R-UIMs, and Nokia is unwilling to make CDMA phones, I'll be sticking with Cingular.

in NYC (where i live) Cingular coverage is not as good as t-mobile's. i have both contract at the moment (and carry 2 phones, but T-mo works way cheaper and better for me in NYC)
