My Speedo/odo died during a PGR ride today. Anyone have any tips, hints, or suggestions on what I need to look at to see if I can fix it myself?
NOTE: While I can strip down any firearms known to man, I am usually not allowed to get near any motor vehicle. So please, when giving me mechanical instructions, talk to me like I'm five. Thanks.

WW, a kid I asked at work said to be very careful disconnecting the wheel end because I may not be able to get it back on without jacking up the bike. Does that sound right? I figured that even I could make this fix but getting a new cable, but I'm hoping I don't screw something else up while doing this simple step.

No, the kid is clueless. The speedo cable unscrews from the drive unit at the front axle, and goes back on easily. It also unscrews easily from the back of the speedo.

The core is probably broken- it is not unusual for the installer to install it with the cable having too tight of a bend, shortening it's live. You can get a kit at the auto parts store with a new cut-to-fit core and the proper lube, or you can buy a whole new cable from Suzuki.

If you have issues changing it ride over here to Decatur and I'll fix it for beer.

WAIT A MINUTE NOW, DOC. Beer is kind of high price, ain't it? I'm hoping this is easy enough for me to fix....but I'm not very bright to begin with.:fight1:

Installing it probably won't be a problem, finding one might be. No one seems to have the cable in stock. Guess I'll have to order it and wait a week, then go visit Dr.

My cable broke because of a too tight a curve entering the speedo head. It onlt took 5 minutes to unscrew the head end, remove the grommets leading down to the wheel hub, unscrew that and reverse install the new cable from the bottom up making sure to lessen the arc entering the speedo head.

The cable came today. The broken one has a flexible metal (spring)covering. The replacement doesn't. The cable is just in the rubber cover. The only way I can see to put the metal covering on the new one is the take the new one apart. Or just put the new one on without the covering. The cable itself is already lubed.
ps The old one was broken, right at the wheel hub.

If you got the "inside cable" only part....it should slide right into the "sleeve" of the old one.

If in doubt...lemme have your snail mail again, and I'll get a "whole unit" in the mail to you. :bluethum:

What you have should be fine, though.

I installed what I have in about 5 minutes and it works. If I need to put the rubber (actually I think its vinyl) into the spring covering, I'd have to pull off the end, slide it in and then try to re-crimp the end.

Boxed up the cable I got yesterday, will ship it via UPS this evening if I get time after work. If not, I'll beg the wife to ship tomorrow. :)

I really do appreciate all the help I've gotten, not just from wildwolf, but also DrBob and others. This is a good place to go if you don't know something.
